Fueled by the Verizon 5G future, the New Business Incubation team is anchored in Verizon’s Corporate Strategy organization with a mission to: Scale new software automation businesses fueled by the power of the 5G future. This unique charter, paired with the strength of Verizon’s best-in-class network, broad customer base and massive technological capabilities, puts the New Business Incubation team at the forefront of innovation as we embark on the 5G future.

Comprised of passionate and forward-thinking leaders, the New Business Incubation team includes ecosystem builders and industry experts in location technology, robotics, digital twins, fleet management, energy transformation, industrial IoT and other emergent technologies. With a belief that the autonomous future sits at the intersection of intelligent networking, devices and software, the team is working to shepherd customers through their digitization journeys to enable the connection, management and operation of physical and digital elements needed for the Industry 4.0 future. The combination of these technologies will transform Industry to deliver new levels of efficiency, intelligence and business outcomes in productivity, experiences and safety.

About the role. We are creating new autonomous ecosystems using the transformational power of Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband and Mobile Edge Compute. Powered by the latest technologies and running on top of one of the biggest and most reliable networks in the world, the work we are doing helps to demonstrate how we are truly at the dawn of Industry 4.0. As the Director of Research and Development, you will work with various executives, managers, and individual contributors within the organization to manage relevant elements of the R&D program.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead NBI wide R&D programs for all NBI R&D locations (i.e. Denver, Texas, New York) in coordination with the relevant executives within the each of the NBI organizations

  • Lead the R&D team to ensure clear, effective, and efficient program and process management

  • Establish and manage relevant elements of the R&D pipeline in coordination with other teams throughout the R&D stage-gate process

  • Help drive ecosystem investment decisions by advising on and providing evaluation and validation of relevant technologies, programs, and organizations relevant to the R&D program

  • Execute R&D for internal projects, in support of external projects, or in collaboration with partner organizations

  • Responsible at the executive level for assigned R&D fixed asset and equipment management

What we’re looking for...

Must have:

  • 10+ years of experience in a combination of leadership and management positions

  • 7 years of experience leading or managing early technology projects in an R&D leadership position

  • Excellent presentation skills to include generating presentations, documents, and ability to engage with executives, strategic partners, and technical staff

  • Excellent communication skills in conveying R&D concepts and approaches to various audiences

  • Proven ability to manage the management of projects by leading, mentoring, and growing project management teams and technical managers

  • Deep understanding of cyber-physical systems, field validation of systems, cloud environments, and network communications

  • Proven ability to evaluate new strategic architecture and ecosystem approaches and work with teams using methodologies such as agile

  • Proven experience working with sourcing, legal, compliance, business operations, sales operations, and similar business functions

Preferred:

  • Executive technical leadership experience as a startup executive (CTO, CIO, VP of Engineering or similar)

  • Executive technical leadership experience in a large organization (enterprise, Federal government, military or similar)

  • Degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent

  • 5 years of experience in a dedicated R&D organization, startup, or R&D organization within a successful enterprise company

  • First hand understanding and experience of software development and cyber-physical system lifecycle as a software developer, network engineer, DevOps engineer or similar

  • First hand understanding of cellular networks and the use of 5G and edge compute technologies in R&D

For part-timers, your coverage will vary as you may be eligible for some of these benefits depending on your individual circumstances.

If you are hired into a Colorado work location, the compensation range for this position is between $176,000 and $326,000 based on a full-time schedule. The salary will vary depending on your location and confirmed job-related skills and experience. This is an incentive based position with the potential to earn more. For part-time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours.
