Business Development

Portland, Oregon, United States

What you’ll be doing...

The Company

Verizon is serious about innovation. About being the first and being the best. We are building a future using technologies like 5G, Mobile Edge Computing and Artificial Intelligence that are allowing us to create products that were previously impossible. We’re building tomorrow with the best of today.

5G Disruption is an entrepreneurial team within Verizon's Corporate Strategy & New Business Incubation organization, tasked with seeding the next generation of net-new software businesses for Verizon above the network layer. We're leveraging the power of our networks to create entirely new B2B products and solutions that push beyond our connectivity capabilities and have the potential to create transformational new growth vectors for Verizon.

Your Role

Are you excited to build the future? The 5G Disruption team invents the technologies and seeds the transformative businesses of tomorrow. You will be leading a team solving novel technical problems and proving the feasibility of cutting edge technologies. Collaborating with a passionate team of engineers and business analysts your team will provide the technical insight to guide us in building truly innovative solutions. Our work cuts across AI/ML, CV, IoT, IIoT, Edge Computing, Public and Private Cloud, robotics, drones and many more. You're a leader. You inspire by managing and working with people smarter than you, while channeling their energy to execute on a strategy you help develop. You’re a team coach: you get the best from your team by leveraging strengths and encouraging growth where there are development opportunities. You know your team well and they know that you have their back.

You’re also a futurist and a technologist. You can mentor, guide, and engage with your team on the technical problems they are facing. You can help them find alternative solutions and know when to change tack. You are used to managing diverse team members, building a culture where all voices are heard and the quietest voices amplified.

You like the idea of playing a key role in a growing company while also having the freedom to develop and refine this leadership role to grow the team. You love working with and talking to people, motivating our partners, and employees to think strategically. You enjoy the concept of having the perfect balance of leadership from above as well as enough individual ownership to define how your team will operate. You take pride in your work and you believe, truly believe, that the success for the team is more important than your individual success.

  • Lead a family of technology specialists helping to keep engineering standards in place across a discipline.
  • Lead teams with responsibilities of hiring, management, career growth, team building, and mentoring.
  • Provide direction to the team.
  • Leading by focusing on what problems to solve and building the teams to figure out how.
  • Manage a team of employees and contractors.
  • Help write SOWs to fill out development skills needed for incoming projects.
  • Coordinate activities of the group, individual contributors, and senior-level personnel to meet project deadlines and deliveries.
  • Provide wide-ranging technical and logistical leadership on how best to position talent.

Where you’ll be working:

In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days set by your manager.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • At least four years of leadership experience.
  • Experience managing technical team members.
  • Management experience within an agile environment.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • A degree.
  • Software polyglot experience.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Azure, and on-prem service offering and deployments.
  • Significant experience with AI, ML, and CV technologies, tools, and techniques.
  • Significant experience designing, building and managing Internet-scale APIs.
  • Experience with edge computing paradigms.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative Agile team.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and desire to learn new skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to embrace change and work in a fast paced, iterative environment.
