What you’ll be doing...

The Verizon Distinguished Architect (DA) plays a meaningful role in building long-term business relationships. This is a high-impact role working closely with the 5G|MEC Innovation Team, Sales, other internal teams, and participants at the University of Illinois Research Park to identify accelerate innovation and use cases related to 5G.
This position is responsible for executing a portfolio of activities to drive the development or testing of 5G|Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) with the Research Park participants. In order to effectively be successful, the position requires being onsite at UIUC campus on a frequent basis. You will be responsible to engage the participants to build deep, consultative technical relationships, becoming a trusted adviser for innovation. As the primary Verizon contact for a Customer Innovation Hub, you are ideally positioned to understand the customer's high-level objectives, know the focus areas of innovation that match to Verizon strategy for 5G|MECand interface with the appropriate sales teams. Successful innovation created in the Innovation Hub will have implications for delivery in the real world where Verizon can sell network connectivity and other segments of the solution.

  • Educate customers on the value of Verizon 5G and MEC.
  • Ideate on potential new use cases where 5G\MEC provide a differentiator.
  • Understand and know the customer use cases under development.
  • Work with customers related to 5G innovation in areas such as AI, XR, IOT and Cognitive Video.
  • Recognize when there is synergy between the customers’ focus and what Verizon product strategy.
  • Evaluate suggested projects to determine if feasible for Verizon involvement.
  • Liaison with customer on 5G use cases, development and testing of applications or solutions.
  • Keep customer informed on new advancements and devices and consult on what may be applicable to them.
  • Point of contact for customer to connect with applicable Verizon team to support customer needs.
  • Manage customer expectations.
  • Interface with Technology Development team on applicable use cases of interest to Verizon.
  • Report updates to the team and leadership.
  • Interface with Verizon marketing and communication team to publish success stories.
  • Help promote the customer success stories.
  • Travel to customer sites, conferences, and other related events as required.
  • Obtain feedback from Innovation Hub customers and apply to program for continuous improvement.

What we’re looking for...

You are a highly effective communicator and listen with both your eyes and ears and people come to you for advice and counsel. You will value diverse perspectives and seek out different points of view when trying to solve a complex problem. You’re not afraid to speak your mind and know it’s better to call attention to something before it gets out of hand. You have a sense of urgency and deliver on-time, on-budget results. You keep the big picture in focus as you manage the details on the way to the finish line. You love a good plan, but are not married to it, and can help it evolve as circumstances dictate.
You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience in pre-sales, customer-facing consulting, or other relevant technical experience.
  • Experience developing customer relationships.
  • Experience and knowledge with concepts of 5G technology.
  • Experience in at least two of the key industries that 5G is likely to disrupt: immersive entertainment, venue-based experiences, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, Logistics, public sector / smart cities, education, hospitality.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Willingness to travel.

Even better if you have:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering
  • Experience delivering results in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to apply technical acumen to recommend appropriate 5G|MEC solutions within the customers’ focus areas.
  • Experience with advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality, IoT or Cognitive Video.
  • Passion and knowledge of the current technology landscape, in particular startups and emerging technologies that will benefit from 5G connectivity.
  • Telecom experience with exposure to and understanding of 5G technology (5G engineering expertise is not specifically required for this role).
  • Aptitude to work outside of your comfort zone and get things done quickly and in some cases with little to no supervision.
