General Overview:

Applications are sought for a scientific co-op opportunity in Vaccine Process Research and Development within our company's Research Laboratories. The candidate will work within the Vaccine Process Development department to develop upstream processes for the vaccine candidates, especially to optimize cell expansion processes.

Specific Job Requirements:

Under the direction of the group leader, this position will be responsible for the upstream process development of vaccine candidates, especially for the optimization of cell expansion/N-1. The successful candidate will perform lab-scale process development studies, develop robust, efficient, scalable cell culture processes for vaccine production. Duties may include designing of experiments, setting up lab-scale cell culture and infection reactors, collecting routine samples during cell growth/ infection, performing analysis for cell viability, metabolite production, substrate consumption, maintaining/coordinating raw material, and equipment inventories, support additional experiments to gain more experience with different scale of reactors. The candidate will gain a more in-depth understanding of multiple cell culture processes and bioprocess control strategies, including hands-on experience with different bioreactor technology platforms.

The candidate is expected to function in a multi-disciplinary environment and to contribute subject matter expertise to various functional teams engaged in the development of the vaccine candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the ability to convey the results of their work in both verbal and written formats. In addition to the core duties outlined above, the candidate will be expected to keep careful notes, comply with all required training, and maintain focused attention on laboratory safety for themselves and their team.

Position may require the candidate to be willing to work with infectious agents and/or pathogens. This position will require occasional off-hour and weekend work.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a minimum of a BS/BA in: Relevant Fields: Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology

  • Candidates should have current G.P.A of 3.0 or higher

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to 6 months

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a co-op program at their college / university

  • Candidates should be highly motivated and driven. Willing to take initiative to learn new science and excited to implement new technologies

  • Candidates should be a strong team player. Candidate should be able to balance the needs of multiple disciplines when implementing new technologies

  • Candidates should be comfortable using a PC computer and proficient in Windows-based operating systems and basic applications, such as spreadsheets and databases, at a minimum

  • Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Candidates should have hands-on experience with cell culture/fermentation, upstream process development and/or completion of bioprocess coursework

  • Candidates must have experience working within a Biosafety Level (BSL-2) environment

  • Candidates must have a completion of Statistical design of experiment course work
