Facilities Maintenance Supervisor

Supports the National Science Foundation (NSF) managed United States Antarctic Program (USAP) as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the planning, supervision, and execution of maintenance projects under the supervision of the Amentum Facilities Manager. Deploys to McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer Station in the Austral Summer providing direct supervision of Facilities Maintenance shops and personnel.

The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor holds the senior Subcontract Facilities position for the Station. The Maintenance Supervisor has the authority to allocate Facilities trades resources and to authorize, coordinate and prioritize Facilities work, in coordination with prime contractor Facilities Management and Engineers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains accountability for, commitment to, and involvement with personal, co-worker, community, and project safety as a constant priority
  • Performs ongoing risk and hazard assessments and communicates them effectively
  • Implements and maintains a safe workplace program and ensure that safety is the highest priority on the jobsite.
  • Provides direct supervisory authority in the execution of Facilities preventive maintenance (PM), corrective maintenance (CM), emergency call outs, sustaining project, and Operational Science Support tasking.
  • Assists in accomplishing planning, scheduling, materials take-offs, supervision, and operation of the McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer station Facilities Maintenance Department.
  • Provides ASC Facilities Maintenance Management/Station Facilities Engineer and Amentum Facilities Manager with status updates regarding on ice changes in scheduling, resource loading, safety, work procedures, equipment failures/incidents, and operating postures of critical Facilities Life/Safety equipment
  • Responsible to ensure the Crafts are trained in ASC Environmental, Safety & Health Program (ESH) program, applicable Standard Operating Procedures, Guides and Plans, and for craft training in Maximo.
  • Hold crafts accountable for work order completion and MAXIMO data integrity.
  • Accountable for on time delivery of a weekly SITREP to the Facilities Engineers and Facilities Management.
  • Accountable for adherence to ASC procedures, safety guidelines, and permitting process.
  • Accountable for schedule compliance of planned Facilities PM, CM, and sustaining project work, and for tracking and completion of Facilities Root Cause Analysis (RCA) action items.
  • Accountable to assure that job data is entered for PMs and CMs in Maximo upon task completion.
  • Assists in development of program plans, budgets, and performance assessments
  • Coordinates revision and creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), working with Trades shops to ensure adherence to SOP’s, and to identify and resolve gaps or inaccuracies.
  • Coordinates with the Work Order Supervisor and others to ensure preventive maintenance and work order documentation is maintained.
  • Responsible for communication with the Station Facilities Engineer, Facilities Manager, Senior Facilities Manager and the Amentum Facilities Manager regarding on ice changes in scheduling, resource loading, safety, work procedures, equipment failures/incidents, and operating postures of critical Facilities Life/Safety equipment.
  • Supervises hiring of contract deploying personnel by identifying, interviewing and assisting in final selection of candidates
  • Assists with the ordering of resupply materials for the department to maintain adequate inventory on station
  • Works with Project/Construction staff to coordinate and execute construction projects, and to identify Facilities Maintenance interests and concerns as needed
  • Performs quality assurance review of facilities maintenance work and related documentation.
  • Ensures accurate material and labor charge code use, and accurate/timely timecard submittal
  • Ensures accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved
  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates to relay information, including staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, Quality Assurance procedures, and ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH).
  • Communicates with ASC Teammates, National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, as needed, over the telephone, via email, and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Works with Human Resources to address conflict or personnel issues as they arise
  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism
  • Provides timely performance feedback to staff and timely submission of end-of-season evaluations to Human Resources
  • Ensures staff attendance at required trainings and maintain records of departmental trainings
  • Communicates professionally and informatively with subordinates
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements
  • Implements and maintains Work Center Safety Program and participates in ASC safety objectives

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • BA/BS degree required. Four years additional relevant work experience combined with High School diploma/GED will be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • A minimum of eight years Facilities maintenance experience, three of which must be at the Foreman level or higher with a progressive increase in responsibility.

  • Intermediate level computer skills
  • MS Office Suite experience to include Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledgeable of, and willing to learn and effectively utilize, computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications
  • Competent in LOTO procedures for appropriate tasking
  • Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific tasking
  • Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPE
  • Familiar with fall protection and respirator use
  • Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based on specifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelines
  • Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problems
  • Good organizational and planning skills

Preferred:

  • Intermediate or higher-level experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System
  • License or certification in one or more Trades
  • Degree or Certificate in Construction Management
  • Experience with Alerton Ascent Compass Software
  • Experience with Direct Digital Control (DDC)
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems
  • Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Previous experience working in polar regions

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

Pay Range $ 95,000 through $115,000 annualized
