When you join Verizon

Verizon is one of the world’s leading providers of technology and communications services, transforming the way we connect across the globe. We’re a diverse network of people driven by our shared ambition to shape a better future. Here, we have the ability to learn and grow at the speed of technology, and the space to create within every role. Together, we are moving the world forward – and you can too. Dream it. Build it. Do it here.

What you’ll be doing...

Verizon New Business Incubation (NBI) is looking for a Principal Architecture Engineer to join our architecture organization to align our technical roadmap to the business roadmap and strategy.

Who are you?

You will participate in thought leadership for Data Management in support of a set of technology workstreams such as Logistics, Digital-Twins, Simulation, Robotics and IoT or AI/ML Self Automation and Healing, helping to drive forward the progress of one or more scrum teams. You will work with engineers on how to think about hard-to-change architectural decisions, guiding them through development processes to minimize tech debt and tie architecture to customer requirements. You will work with Product teams to ensure fidelity between requirements and solutions. You are joyful in your work, you place a high level of importance on code quality and the engineering practices that deliver quality, and you believe, truly believe, that success for the team is more important than your individual success.

You will be working in a mixed startup/enterprise environment gaining experience with robotics, drones, LIDAR technologies, autonomy, deep neural networks, edge computing, how those technologies are deployed, and most important, how to best serve the big data requirements of these various constituent components, with a strong focus on security, performance, and excellence in execution.

You will be able to look at the next 6 months, year, or 2 years and with a reasonable educational guess and describe the technical debt, showing an understanding and comprehension of the business/product roadmaps, and how your architectural decisions are impacted.

  • Drive the formation of long term architectural decisions and technical trade-offs especially those related to big data collection, management and consumption.
  • Ensure development across NBI adheres to a Clean Architecture mindset.
  • Analyze industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the Data Platform technology roadmap and system architectures are a competitive advantage.
  • Periodically participate in technology assessments of the Data Platform including “build vs. buy”, patent viability, and acquisition due diligence.
  • Develop and maintain the data management architectural roadmap for NBI’s cross-functional capabilities.
  • Lead the design of a Data Platform to ensure the technology roadmap is aligned with the business goals while minimizing technical debt.
  • Works closely with engineering scrum teams.

Where you'll be working:

In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days set by your manager.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Senior or Principal level engineering experience.

Even better if you have:

  • Software polyglot experience (ease of working with multiple languages, frameworks, and toolsets).
  • Distributed data platform services, big data platforms.
  • Experience with Data Platforms in service to AI, ML, and CV applications, tools, and techniques, especially in leading or bleeding edge techniques.
  • Experience with Big data analytics and Data Science.
  • Familiarity with "The Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method" (see https://resources.sei.cmu.edu/asset_files/whitepaper/1998_019_001_29711.pdf) or equivalent principles.
  • Experience with edge computing paradigms.
  • Familiarity with cloud providers and on-prem service offering and deployments, for example AWS architecture.
  • Experience with common architecture patterns such as clean architecture, micro-service, deep learning, federated learning, and data lake.
  • Experience with service mesh/distributed computing such as Consul/Spark/Flink.
  • Experience with data structure definitions and design patterns.
