The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks.

As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.

We have recently embarked on a Digital transformation journey where we are reimaging the way we work and serve our users. Our projects benefit the community by aiding in providing safe, reliable electricity to everyone:

  • Customer: create analytics to improve customer satisfaction along the customer journey for a lifetime as they move-in to a residence, pay their bill and move to new residences.

  • Transmission & Distribution: develop algorithms to detect asset failures, reduce outages and provide reliable electricity to customers.

  • Smart Meter: provide customers with the electric usage they need to make smart decisions about their home as well as reduce threats and theft in the electric system.

As a Cloud Engineer intern at FirstEnergy, you will work on an agile, diverse, and cross-functional team to automate the deployment of cloud infrastructure and services to support application development and hosting. Some of the tasks completed by a Cloud Engineer are architecting, engineering, deploying, and operationally managing the logical and physical cloud computing infrastructure for the enterprise.

Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of a Cloud Engineer intern:

  • Creating software components, modules and integrations that are dynamically scalable and highly available services in a cloud environment.

  • Assist in the creation of software testing implementations including unit, functional, acceptance, performance, and security tests.

  • Support cloud developers in optimizing and automating cloud engineering activities such as real time migration, provisioning, and deployment, etc.

  • Continually improving cloud product reliability, availability, maintainability & cost/benefit

  • Provide inputs to IT financial management for cloud – on costs associated with capacity build-out, forecast for cloud IT investments, etc.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Information Technology, Computer Science or other related disciplines.

  • Class Standing –or Junior (Graduating in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025) or Sophomore (Graduating in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024).

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

  • Have a strong interest in cloud computing & automation

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Deploying and operating in an Azure cloud environment (AWS and GCP experience is nice to have)

  • Experience in Agile/Scrum methodologies using Azure DevOps

  • Comfortable working in an environment with rapid prototyping and piloting of cloud solutions

  • Experience in infrastructure as code (e.g., ARM, DevOps, GitLab, Terraform, Puppet, Ansible, Chef, Chocolatey)
