When you join Verizon

Verizon is one of the world’s leading providers of technology and communications services, transforming the way we connect across the globe. We’re a diverse network of people driven by our shared ambition to shape a better future. Here, we have the ability to learn and grow at the speed of technology, and the space to create within every role. Together, we are moving the world forward – and you can too. Dream it. Build it. Do it here.

What you’ll be doing...

Verizon New Business Incubation (NBI) is looking for a Principal Architecture Engineer to join our architecture organization that has experience with cutting edge technologies such as computer vision, machine learning, and data pipelines; with a customer-first attitude; and can foster a Clean Architecture mindset across a geographically diverse set of teams. You are an engineer turned architect or an engineer that loves solving hard problems and connecting pieces of technology together. You will bring to the team experience in architecting and building robust, scalable, and distributed applications using a wide range of technologies and architectural patterns.

You will lead a set of technology workstreams such as Robotics and IoT or AI/ML Self Automation and Healing to drive forward the progress of one or more scrum teams. This role may have software architects that often embed into those scrum teams working with engineers of all calibers, teaching them how to think about hard-to-change architectural decisions, guiding them through development processes to minimize tech debt and tying architecture to customer requirements. In this role, you may also have an R&D Engineer available to help you experiment with new technologies, vendors, and/or just play a little mad scientist. You take pride in your work and you believe, truly believe, that the success for the team is more important than your individual success.

  • You will be working in a mixed startup/enterprise environment gaining experience with robotics, drones, LIDAR technologies, autonomy, deep neural networks, edge computing, and how those technologies are deployed with a strong focus on security, performance, and excellence in execution.
  • Drive the formation of long term architectural decisions and technical trade-offs.
  • Ensure development across NBI adheres to clean architecture mindset.
  • Analyzes industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the technology roadmap and system architectures are a competitive advantage.
  • Periodically participates in technology assessments including “build vs. buy”, patent viability, and acquisition due diligence.
  • Develops and maintains the architectural roadmap for NBI’s cross-functional capabilities.
  • Leads the design of systems to ensure the technology roadmap is aligned with the business goals while minimizing technical debt.
  • Build and lead a small team of architects and R&D engineers.
  • Works closely with engineering scrum teams.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Six or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Senior or Principal level engineering experience.
  • Software polyglot experience (ease of working with multiple languages).

****This hybrid role will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days as set by the manager.****

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • A degree.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative agile team.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and desire to learn new skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with all levels of a team.
  • Familiaritywith cloud providers and on-prem service offering and deployments, for example AWS architecture.
  • Significant experience with AI, ML, and CV technologies, tools, and techniques; primarily involving data acquisition, normalization, and contextualization.
  • Familiarity with "The Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method" (see https://resources.sei.cmu.edu/asset_files/whitepaper/1998_019_001_29711.pdf) or equivalent principles.
  • Experience with edge computing paradigms.
  • Experience with service mesh/distributed computing such as Consul/Spark/Flink.
  • Experience with common architecture patterns such as clean architecture, micro-service, deep learning, federated learning, and data lake.
  • Experience with IoT architecture in the areas of security, distributed data, RTOS, networking, real time/batch data collection, and compute/battery optimizations.
  • Experience with data structure definitions and design patterns.
