Bristol Myers Squibb

Materials Science & Engineering Co-op (January – June 2023)

No

New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States

At Bristol Myers Squibb, we are inspired by a single vision – transforming patients’ lives through science. In oncology, hematology, immunology and cardiovascular disease – and one of the most diverse and promising pipelines in the industry – each of our passionate colleagues contribute to innovations that drive meaningful change. We bring a human touch to every treatment we pioneer. Join us and make a difference.

This 6-month co-op position is in the Materials Science & Engineering group, which builds an understanding of material properties to select drug candidates and develops drug products. This department is part of the Drug Product Development in New Brunswick, NJ.

The group is a diversified mix of scientists (engineers, chemists, physicists, and pharmaceutical scientists). We characterize and analyze solid forms (i.e. polymorphs, salts, amorphous solid dispersions) for the purpose of selecting a final form to deliver to patients, and to evaluate form and form changes in API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) and drug product manufacturing processes.

The position has the primary responsibility of performing API crystallizations, pharmaceutical solid-state physical characterization, and thermodynamic studies to evaluate the relative stability of solid forms. In addition, the position will provide the opportunity to obtain basic skills in the operation of solid state characterization instrumentation (PXRD, DSC, TGA and vibrational spectroscopy, SEM, and optical microscopy) and offer the opportunity to interface with other groups within our company including the drug product formulators and process chemists. Students will be working with specific scientists on projects of interest that could be either lab or computer related.

Here are a couple of the past co-op projects.

  • Crystallization which included modeling, working with biologics, crystallization process development, process scale up and risk mitigation.

  • Crystal Engineering Protocol Validation Support which included training in crystal engineering, in-silico modeling, solid form characterization (such as powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis (TGA/DSC), and other spectroscopic techniques), and experimental crystallization techniques; exposure to single-crystal X-ray crystallography and high-throughput screening methodologies. Potential for publication of new crystal structures determined.

Please note: relocation will not be provided.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited university program seeking an undergraduate degree, masters or PhD. in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, chemical physics, physics, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy.

  • Hands-on laboratory research experience is preferred.

  • Must have good oral/written communication skills and be able to work in a team environment

  • Must include GPA on resume for consideration (program requires GPA of 3.0 or greater)

  • All candidates must be authorized to work in the US without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.

  • Must be eligible to work full-time, 40 hours per week, from January 2023 – June 2023.
