The Vice President of Software Engineering leads the product development track of our Pearson Online Classroom platform for K12 education internationally. Reporting directly to the global CTO of Virtual Learning, this role is responsible for the bespoke software development practices, architecture, and delivery of Pearson’s Online Classroom platform which serves K12 learners and institutions with rich capabilities in all phases of education: from content to assessment, placement to progression, and assistance to success along with the data infrastructure to operate a whole school at scale. This leader will drive innovation into the academic experience, the operations and scaling of our solutions, and the global reach of our platform. This role is resourced with over thirteen delivery teams including employees and near/offshore partners and will lead concurrent development tracks, leverage advising and influencing skills used to build roadmaps with Product Management, grow their team through mentoring, upskilling and hiring, and ultimately deliver innovative tech built to grow our business into new markets. This new tech is cloud based, multi-tenent, microservices based platform built on a proven core product and enhanced with shared services from Pearson’s other businesses with scale and stability at the core. To get there, this role will build upon their experience to move elements of the legacy core into this new capability and transform both the code and the process do delight our learners and open new paths to market in an ever-changing industry. Most importantly, this role will build a positive culture where working and playing hard are kept in balance by working smarter, communicating transparently, being accountable, visible, and honest.

Responsibilities

  • Managing investment and operations budgets over $30M
  • Driving concurrent initiatives impacting multiple business groups and applications
  • Transforming current state products into scalable future state platforms
  • Creating long term delivery roadmaps in collaboration with Product Management
  • Building a culture of continuous improvement through iterative design and focus on quality
  • Leading staff to exceed program and operational metrics while always improve velocity
  • Delivery of organizational commitments; on-time and on-budget
  • Establishing opportunities for innovation through prototyping, training staff in new technologies, and encouraging out-of-box thinking
  • Drive critical partner sourcing and managing complex technology partner relationships including within Pearson

Qualifications

Experience

  • Delivery of a microservices based, globally scaled platform on Microsoft .NET framework, and Azure Dev Ops.
  • Proven experience in managing large cross-functional Agile development teams both on and offshore. Experience working in a SAFe environment is a plus.
  • Track record of effectively delivering large scale programs through Agile practices and consistent velocity improvement
  • Comfortable leading matrix-based teams (direct & indirect reporting plus partners)
  • Influencing senior level Product Management and business stakeholders, processing positive and negative feedback and synthesizing direction to move programs forward
  • User centric design with flexible data structure and algorithm focus: building instrumentation and observability into all aspects of the platform to circle back and further improve user experience
  • Strong financial acumen required to deliver programs with financials plans based on complex capitalization / operating expenditure models.
  • Ability to adopt and integrate software capabilities for assessment and/or learning experiences from other parts of Pearson or 3rd party partnerships.
  • Software engineering degree required.
  • Minimum 4 years leading and supervising development teams.
  • Development of educational software a plus but not required.
