Our company's Protein Engineering group located in Rahway, NJ, is seeking undergraduate summer interns. The successful candidates will function as a fully-integrated member of a protein engineering team, consisting of biochemists, molecular biologists, synthetic and analytical chemists, engineers, and bioinformaticians. The position will focus on creating novel proteins for use as enzymes or therapeutic proteins.

The intern will:

  • Be involved in the engineering of novel proteins and their applications to drug discovery and development.

  • Perform research using techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry and/or engineering to understand and solve key challenges in the engineering of proteins.

  • Learn and apply innovative protein methods including high-throughput expression, cell-free expression, or protein immobilization.

  • Learn and apply state-of-the-art machine learning methods to predict protein function.

  • Apply novel screening methods utilizing automation and high-throughput experimentation.

  • Attend departmental and team meetings to gain a wider perspective on the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Have opportunities to present their research in both oral and written formats.

We are seeking intern candidates with a record of strong academic performance, strong communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to work in a cross-functional environment.

Required Education and Skills:

  • Candidates must be currently pursuing a BA/BS degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemical biology, molecular biology, chemical engineering or related field.

  • Candidates must have completed a minimum of 2 years of studies towards a BA/BS degree as of June 2022.

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to 12 weeks during the summer. Typical internship dates fall between May - Aug 2022

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Candidates should have a significant interest in protein engineering, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, or biotechnology.

  • Candidates should have basic laboratory skills and research experience. Example areas include experience with: notebook recording, safe lab practices, protein production and characterization, computation, laboratory automation.

  • Candidates should have experience working with enzymes and/or proteins.

  • Candidates should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
