Do you have a strong contruction background? Are you an exceptional communicator with proven success in project management? If so, Kentucky American Water is looking for you! We are seeking a construction leader to join our team in Lexington, KY. In this newly created role, you will develop our process and help drive pipeline projects forward. The Construction Project Manager will be an integral part in our success by leading our contruction contracting program. This includes inspecting job sites, budgeting, permitting, overseeing timelines, and building relationships with contractors and government personnel.

Primary Role

As the Construction Project Manager, you will be responsible for the supervision and/or management of capital construction project activity, inspection teams, and contract construction in the safe delivery of water and wastewater investment projects in accordance with technical standards, company policies and practices, and state and local regulatory requirements. Projects or assignments fall within the following general categories listed below:

  • Managing activities concerned with the delivery of multiple capital investment projects. This includes project budgeting and administration within an established capital investment management process, management or self-performance of project delivery tasks including safety reporting and evaluation, permitting, procurement, construction management, field inspection, testing, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Support project delivery efforts through interpreting and determining asset and operational requirements, organizing and executing detailed engineering design tasks, administering project specific permitting tasks, providing technical support and operator training during construction and commissioning.
  • Troubleshooting related to water/wastewater operations and maintenance concerns, project or program management for maintenance of engineered assets (storage tanks, reservoirs, dams, etc.) or event management support related to unplanned occurrences (droughts, storms, floods, power outage, asset failures, etc.).

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage multiple projects and perform varied engineering assignments associated with capital investment construction.
  • Efficient management of sub-contractors including negotiations of sub-contract agreements; delivery of projects on time and within pre-established budgets, and safety reporting
  • Reinforce the importance of developing a diverse workforce and provide effective leadership in procurement activities to increase diversity in contracted construction services.
  • Supervise field and contract personnel to ensure safe and timely completion of assignments, within budget and adherence to standards
  • Assist in the preparation of technical, bidding, and contractual documents associated with delivery of capital investment projects
  • Establish project budget and cost.
  • Monitor and manage budgets and schedules for medium to small Capital Investment Projects and programs of moderate scope and complexity
  • Provide field construction expertise on engineering and operational issues
  • Support business development activities through the analysis and integration of water and wastewater business opportunities.
  • Adhere to Engineering Standards, specifications and, equipment manufacturer recommendations to support company initiatives
  • Effective communication by listening and providing constructive feedback; supporting the creation of an open and honest work environment
  • Provide effective leadership and communication that will enhance our abilities to be flexible to changing business environments and technology implementations

  • Effective management skills (e.g. planning, organizing, coordinating individual staff and teams).Understanding of construction procurement processes and construction management principles.
  • Understanding of construction project scheduling, sequencing, and execution.
  • Understanding of water and wastewater construction standards, materials, equipment, safety regulations and installation procedures

Experience/Education

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering, construction management, or related field; commensurate experience may be considered
  • At least 5 years of experience managing and implementing Capital Improvement Programs and construction projects.

Travel Requirements

  • Travel within the field may be required
  • Minimal travel beyond state service area.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Professional Engineer License (PE) and/or Construction Management certifications preferred
