The Medical Behavioral Health Integration Specialist (MBIS) is a direct clinical liaison between UBH, health plan customers, and the clinical network. This position integrates a collaborative process which assesses plans, implements, coordinates, monitors and evaluates the options and services to meet the enrollee’s health needs, using education, communication and all available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes.

If you are located in the state of MD, you will have the flexibility to telecommute* as you take on some tough challenges. Must reside and be licensed in Maryland.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identifies high-risk enrollees, monitors utilization, creates care plans to address problems while maintaining quality of care. (Information is collected from MCOs, the patient, caregiver(s), LBHAs and other relevant parties.) Utilizes advanced clinical skills to make effective decisions to meet the enrollee’s health needs, using education, communication, and all available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes
  • Travels locally to treatment locations in Maryland up to 30% of the time to meet with participants, discharge planners and other providers to ensure that treatment is coordinated and participant is following up with all treatment recommendations
  • Travels to ER to meet with participants to re-engage in case management as appropriate and participate as resource personnel for care teams (no direct care provided)
  • Screens, identifies and obtains approval on high-risk/cost, catastrophic, long term chronic cases which will benefit from care management services. Referrals for such cases may originate from MCO’s, facilities, providers, participants or family members
  • Integrates a collaborative process which assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the options and services to meet the participant’s health needs, using education, communication, and all available resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes. For the Frail and Elderly, Functional Assessment and Treatment Plan Summary forms as completed by contracted network clinicians are used by Optum Care Advocates, in addition to the medical chart, to make utilization decisions regarding appropriate services
  • Track patient follow up and clinical outcomes in system
  • Document in-person and telephone encounters in the system
  • Collaborates with providers to determine acuity of mental health and substance use concerns and refer enrollees to appropriate community resources
  • Authorizes medically appropriate services for enrollees to facilitate quality cost-effective patient outcomes in a timely manner
  • Performs other required duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or Marriage or Family Counseling, or Licensed Ph.D., or an RN with 2 or more years of experience in behavioral health
  • Licenses must be active and unrestricted in state of residence
  • 2+ years of experience in a related mental health environment
  • Proficient computer skills and good working knowledge of Microsoft Word
  • Ability to travel, locally, up to 30-50% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an environment that required coordination of benefits and utilization of multiple groups and resources for patients
  • Experience working with individuals with co-morbidity of substance use disorders and mental health diagnoses
  • Experience working with low-income populations
  • Experience working with the aged, blind or disabled
  • Medical/Behavioral setting experience (i.e. hospital, managed care organization, or joint medical/behavioral outpatient practice)
  • Dual diagnosis experience with mental health and substance abuse
  • Clinical training experience
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Function independently and responsibly with minimal supervision
