Job Description

Position Description:

As a member of the Site Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) team, the selected candidate will work collaboratively to ensure that compliant environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs are developed and implemented within operating departments at the Boston & Cambridge sites. Integrates EHS programs into daily operations to assure regulatory compliance, achieves continuous performance improvement, meeting EHS performance objectives. Partners with operations to develop objectives to achieve these goals in alignment with site business goals and values.

  • Serve as the Biosafety Officer (BSO) for the Boston & Cambridge sites ensuring compliance to our Company's Biorisk program as well as the City of Boston & Cambridge Biosafety regulations.

  • Review all Biosafety Risk Assessments for accuracy and conformance to Federal, State and Local regulation. Ensure appropriate/effective controls are in place to prevent or eliminate employee exposure.

  • Serve on the Boston/Cambridge Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Safety Committee and other committees as necessary.

  • Develop and deliver general biosafety/bloodborne pathogen/biosecurity and pathogen specific trainings.

  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Biosafety which may include providing guidance during emergency response as well as pandemic planning & preparedness.

  • Provide support to the Global Employee Health Medical Surveillance program as needed.

  • Ensure the timely submission of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) annual reports to the City of Boston and Cambridge Public Health Departments as well as renewals for site Biosafety/rDNA Permits.

  • Supports other Company EHS programs. Examples may include hazard assessment, management of change, equipment risk assessments, industrial hygiene, process safety, incident investigation, medical surveillance, ergonomics, high risk work, EHS training, permitting, and various others.

  • Assures completion of all regulatory submissions, notifications, etc. required to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local EHS requirements.

  • Ability to identify hazards, establish corrective/preventive actions and ensure effective implementation of those actions.

Position Qualifications:

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, concentration in Biological Sciences or related field with molecular biology, virology, microbiology and/or Safety or Environmental related technical discipline.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 5-10 years applied professional EHS work experience. Advanced level of proficiency in the areas of biosafety, occupational safety, critical thinking, and communication skills.

  • Intermediate level of skill with project management and problem solving.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in industrial hygiene and/or the management of site environmental programs (Air, Water, Waste).

  • Relevant professional certification(s) preferred including RBP, CBSP, P.E., CSP and/or CIH.
