Job Summary:

The USGS Water Mission Area (WMA) Web Communications Branch (WCB), develops and disseminates water data and information and plain language water science content through static websites, social media, and other outreach and education activities, targeted to stakeholders as defined by WMA Programs and leadership.

Akima is hiring a Community Outreach Specialist whose primary responsibility is to support the communications goals of the Water Mission Area through its website and social media channels. The candidate will develop and deliver outreach materials; assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of communications campaigns through the Water Mission Area website and social media accounts; and track, evaluate, and report on outcomes of communications efforts. Knowledge of scientific principles and concepts relevant to understanding the mission of USGS Water to effectively communicate with internal, external, technical and non-technical audiences is required. The Community Outreach Specialist must be skilled in applying this knowledge to create clear, accurate, engaging web and social media outreach products. Skill and experience in communication activities include implementation of communications strategies. Skills in oral and written communication; and in knowledge of specialized and general-purpose software and tools used to create outreach media, multimedia and social media is required. Ability to work effectively with personnel across the organization.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Creation and delivery of communications material in support of WMA's science portfolio.
  • Perform science outreach through the Water Mission Area website and social media channels. Use communications goals and knowledge of technical and lay audiences to determine appropriate outreach venues.
  • Support the communication goals and objectives of WMA and WCB management, scientists, and technologists, as well as support for the WMA programs, USGS, and the Department of the Interior (DOI).

* Follow the policies and protocols established by DOI, USGS, and WMA and work closely with WCB communications team to conduct all aspects of the writing, editing, review, and approval process for outreach products using multiple traditional and emerging communications channels.

* Plan and execute communications campaigns through the Water Mission Area website and social media channels

  • Outreach evaluation and strategic planning:

* Evaluate the effectiveness of WMA communication efforts in close coordination with WCB and WMA managers.

* Use evidence gathered during evaluation to recommend improvements to established website and social media communications practices and forward-looking strategic communications plans that focus on WCB, WMA, and USGS priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science field such as water resources, natural resources, ecology, environmental science.
  • One year experience creating clear, accurate, engaging web and social media outreach products.
  • One year of experience with implementation of communications strategies.
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication.
  • Experience with specialized and general-purpose software and tools used to create outreach media, multimedia and social media.
  • Able to obtain and maintain the equivalent of a public trust clearance.
  • Able to travel 2-3 times a year for seminars or meetings.
