*This position is fully remote* About the Opportunity The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks. As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 14 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college. IT Network Transport Specialist Network Transport Interns in the Network Engineering & Operations department will work closely with FirstEnergys network teams and business units to deliver data networking, transport, and communications solutions for business and operational purposes. The FirstEnergy IT Transport-WAN Team is a 24x7 engineering and operations group responsible for the organizations private wide area network consisting of DWDM, MPLS, and Microwave transport networks. The Team is responsible for the architecture, engineering, implementation, operation, maintenance, reliability, and licensing/regulatory compliance of the WAN with all associated elements that comprise it. Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of a Network Transport Specialist: - Engineering, implementation, and continued support of new systems and services for MPLS, DWDM, and microwave systems - Deliver successful project execution including schedule and budget for assigned initiatives - Effective collaboration with FirstEnergys Fiber Team, field technicians, vendors, and support contractors - Delivery of high-performance and high-availability communications in a 24x7 enterprise to achieve service performance expectations with appropriate redundancies for diverse communications - Adherence to Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Compliance procedures - Confirming that all procedures are followed properly (e.g. change management, testing, documentation, etc.) - Working across FirstEnergy to ensure that communications solutions meet business needs and objectives. Applicant Requirements: - Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelors degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Sciences & Technology or other technology related disciplines. - Class Standing Graduating Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 - Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. - Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future) Preferred Skills/ Experience - Network routing & switching hardware and systems - Network design, engineering, and drawing management tools - Transport technologies such as MPLS, DWDM, microwave - TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Internet, firewalls, security, and Internet tools - Environmental support systems for the technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.) - Project management concepts and tools - Familiarity with fiber (single-mode, multi-mode, ADSS, OPGW) Ideal Candidate: - Highly motivated to work independently, utilizing virtual technologies, and learn quickly - Strong ownership of assignments - Must be organized and work well with constant priority changes - Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects - Demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls Your Resume Must Include: - Major/Minor/Degree - GPA, - Anticipated graduation date Resume Suggestions: We encourage you to include on your resume courses completed relevant to the position you are applying.
