Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a full range of overhaul, repair, and service on all engineer/ heavy equipment maintenance at the Field and Sustainment level of Maintenance. Performs maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on various pieces of heavy equipment including but not limited to military and civilian heavy equipment. Ensure strict compliance to safety practices and support the APS-2 Safety Policies and Procedures. Instills a safety first mentality within respective work areas and a culture that achieves low accident rates and minimal lost-time injuries. Adhere to ISO Policies, Procedures, and Work Instructions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs organizational, intermediate level maintenance/modifications on military equipment, sub-systems, support equipment and related systems within a wide assortment of wheel vehicles including trailers.
  • Diagnoses system malfunctions, isolate causes, and correct deficiencies.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using Technical Manuals (TM), lifting devices, hand and pneumatic tools.
  • Inspects, repairs, and replaces components, engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies.
  • Trains team members in solving unusual maintenance problems by analysis and troubleshooting. Identifies parts in repair manuals and places order request for needed parts.
  • May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, may adjust and maintain machinery such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and any other related machinery.
  • Recommends revisions to maintenance procedures to improve efficiency and ensure quality workmanship.
  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.


Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of recent heavy equipment experience gained either in military or commercial application.
  • Must know theory and principles of engine operations and accessories and components.
  • Read, interpret and use vehicle maintenance manuals, service bulletins, wiring/schematic diagrams, data tables and other specifications to determine feasibility and method to repair or replace malfunctioning or damaged components.
  • Must be able to inspect, repair and operate.
  • Must possess basis skills in computer operations.
  • Must have ability to read, interpret and apply TM instructions, publications, and safety rules. Must have ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Must have a current valid US drivers license
  • Must have a US Passport
  • Must be a US Citizen

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

This is a typical office environment with no unusual hazards. Occasionally lifting to 20 pounds, kneeling, standing, walking and routinely sitting the majority of the time. Constant metal alertness, excellent planning/organizing skills, and must be able to work under deadlines.
