Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, the Executive Director, CEO Communications, will lead the effort to activate the voice of our CEO to elevate the BMS narrative in an authoritative, authentic, and consistent manner. As a key leader of the Corporate Communications team, the Executive Director, CEO Communications, will play an instrumental role in building internal and external engagement around the BMS mission and driving our corporate reputation as a leader in the pharmaceutical industry

Key Responsibilities

  • Partners with Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs, and Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, to develop a singular and compelling CEO positioning and communications strategy.

  • Gains and maintains a clear understanding of the purpose and workings of the Office of the CEO, including business priorities, strategies and milestones, and capitalizes on these as catalysts for communication opportunities.

  • Masters the communication voice, tone and style of the CEO for a wide variety of stakeholder audiences and settings, both internal and external.

  • Co-develops a foundational personal narrative for the CEO that can be employed to personalize communication opportunities as necessary.

  • Ensures the CEO is well-positioned for media interviews and public speaking opportunities through thoughtful and rigorous training, coaching and preparation.

  • Develops key messages, reference and proof points, speeches, scripts, letters, meetings and assorted media content to support the CEO’s internal and external appearances and interactions.

  • Devises and delivers an integrated annual CEO communications "campaign" strategy, including activation calendar with target audiences, messaging tactics and performance metrics.

  • Works closely with the Office of the CEO and communications teams throughout Corporate Affairs to plan, prepare, align and execute the CEO communications strategy.

  • Develops content for CEO’s participation in annual shareholders’ meeting and other critical investor and stakeholder events.

  • Maintains a flexible but strategic calendar of media "moments" and opportunistically seek out stakeholder engagements for the CEO that advance the BMS corporate narrative across media platforms, including internal and external live events, print, broadcast and digital/social media, and partner interactions.

  • Maintains engagement with Leadership Team to ensure alignment around enterprise positioning and messaging to ensure consistent messaging to employees, business partners and external stakeholders.

  • Represents the CEO’s needs in terms of issues management preparedness and ensure briefing and response readiness at all times.

  • Remains well-versed on mission-critical areas of the business internally and stay abreast of trends among competitors and the industry, to gather insights and shape proactive recommendations for CEO communications.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 12+ years of corporate communications experience working with CEO and/or C-Suite executives.

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or related discipline.

  • Excellent writing and research skills, with knowledge of AP style and a keen attention to detail.

  • Exceptional written, verbal, facilitation and interpersonal communications skills.

  • Strong executive presence and experience managing high-exposure opportunities.

  • Strong business acumen, with a demonstrated ability to understand and translate business strategy.

  • Proven experience counseling and coaching C-Suite executives.

  • Ability to collaborate and drive alignment across multiple departments and throughout matrixed organization to execute complex communications.

  • Exceptional problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and balance multiple high-profile initiatives.

  • Superior collaborative and team-building skills.
