Job Description

Attention NJ Applicants: In April 2020, our Company announced plans to consolidate our New Jersey campuses into a single New Jersey headquarters location in Rahway, NJ by 2023. Therefore, the NJ work location for this role will be temporarily based and the exact timing of the departmental move to Rahway, NJ will be communicated at a future date.

The Enterprise Strategy Office (ESO) develops, implements, and drives enterprise strategy in support of our company, its customers, and shareholders. The scope of this group includes strategy development, strategy execution and value realization, enterprise strategic planning, risk management, as well as strategic venture investments in healthcare as part of our Global Health Innovation fund. Together, we identify business critical opportunities, frame and evaluate options, and ensure effective implementation and cross-functional engagement to realize impact.

The Executive Director, Strategy will lead the assessment of enterprise strategy priorities that are complex questions with significant upside for the company, but high ambiguity. This includes ongoing strategic initiatives across our company as well as the establishment of new capabilities within the Strategy office. This role will work cross-functionally with senior leaders (e.g., Executive Team minus 1, minus 2) to socialize and refine initiatives and capabilities, building a coalition of support that is needed to drive the creation and adoption of change.

This role is a critical partner across all lines of business. The selected candidate will collaborate with leaders across our company to solve problems and drive value. This individual will foster a psychologically safe, diverse, and inclusive environment by leading teams both directly and indirectly and mentoring special assignment partners.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the framing, assessment, and recommendation of key internal and external initiatives, in collaboration with executive leaders across the company

  • Collaborate with strategy execution and value realization team to support implementation

  • Bring to bear experience in data, digital, technology, and functional areas of biopharma to identify and prioritize new capability builds, in collaboration with business partners (e.g., IT)

  • Take ownership of internal and external teams to lead ideas from conception to implementation

  • Create external focus by interacting with external leaders and partners from tech firms, consultants, venture capital, and other innovation-focused industries

  • Support and directly drive initiatives as part of the Accelerate program

  • Contribute new ideas and priorities to the Accelerate program, bringing to bear experience in other areas and/or companies

  • Manage directly and indirectly, internal and external associates dedicate to our programs

  • Drive cultural engagement with diverse and inclusive teams

Education:

  • Scientific or engineering Ph.D. from a top ranked graduate program

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Advanced degree (or equivalent experience) with demonstrated capability across diverse roles and functions

  • 4+ years of strategy management consulting experience from a top-tier firm (e.g., BCG, McKinsey, Bain, LEK)

  • A minimum of 10+ years of biopharmaceutical experience across diverse roles, preferably with experience in R&D and commercialization, including strong digital/tech and/or innovation focus

  • Experience managing teams as well as external vendors and representing a large pharmaceutical company to the external world

  • Strong communicator with excellent verbal and written skills; ability to communicate effectively with senior management and across all levels of the business

  • Demonstrated strong leadership qualities with the ability to empathize, listen, and enable other colleagues to thrive

  • Ability to influence decision-making in a highly matrixed organization

  • Strong business acumen, with ability to build consensus

  • Ability to prioritize time and problem solve to focus on most impactful activities / initiatives
