Title: Senior Director/Executive Director Cell Therapy Platform Engineering Research Team Lead

Location: Seattle, Washington

Summary:

The Senior Director/Executive Director Cell Therapy Platform Engineering Research Team Lead will lead a cell therapy team focused on process exploration for new R&ED cell therapy projects and will be working cross-functionally with R&ED and Cell Therapy Development. This team leader will be responsible for integrating and optimization early targets/technologies with potential cell therapy production technology options/platforms to enable acceleration of early-stage and highly-novel assets from the BMS Cell Therapy Portfolio into Cell Therapy Development and path to FIH. The role will report to the SVP of R&ED Immuno-Oncology and Cell Therapy with a dotted line to the SVP of Cell Therapy Development) and will lead an innovative team of process & analytical research scientists.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the Cell Therapy Platform Engineering Research Team:

  • Lead an innovative team working at the interface of engineered T cell biology and cell therapy process development, functioning collaboratively within the research and preclinical setting to explore and develop innovative technologies and platforms that enable rapid transition of cell therapy programs into development

  • Partner with leaders from discovery, preclinical, translational research, and cell therapy development to explore, adapt and develop novel CT technologies/platforms aligned with the vision of advancing highly engineered autologous and allogeneic cell therapies for heme and solid tumors

  • Apply enterprise mindset, informed by a deep understanding of biology and cell engineering to facilitate, and promote agile, rapidly iterative, highly collaborative approaches to cell therapy drug development to drive ambitious timelines and ensure smooth transition from early discovery to development

  • Collaborate with BD, CT Franchise, and other key CT functions to lead the interdisciplinary evaluation and integration of internal and external innovations into the CT pipeline

Deliver strategic leadership and serve as a single point of accountability for advancing a portfolio of highly innovative assets into development:

  • Drive exploration of Cell Therapy platforms and technologies from early concept design to application to pipeline assets and advancement to development across cell therapy engineering, gene delivery platforms and gene editing

  • Prepare recommendations and analyses for strategic decisions on early assets/platforms (e.g., go/no-go), with guidance/approval of key decisions made by Cell Therapy Leadership Team or Research & Early Development governance forums

  • Develop, refine, and lead execution of integrated early asset and platform strategy, mitigating critical tradeoffs between R&ED and early development priorities, to advance innovative technologies towards development

Qualifications/Experience:

  • MD/PhD/PharmD/Secondary scientific degree preferred

  • Minimum 10-12 years of experience in biopharma R&D and/or early development, managing & leading high-performance cross-functional teams

  • Background in immunology and / or cell engineering preferred

  • Relevant experience in process and/or analytical development, process innovation, including extensive working knowledge of end-to-end processes

  • Cell therapy experience preferred; including understanding of critical attributes as they relate to gene delivery, gene editing, and cell therapy products

  • Talented and experienced senior leader with proven abilities in strategic planning, project planning and management, and general problem-solving skills

  • Proven success in leading cross-functional teams, championing an enterprise mindset

  • Demonstrated ability to perform and thrive under pressure, managing multiple workstreams while prioritizing and navigating competing demands, effectively managing tradeoffs

  • Strong history of highly collaborative, teamwork-oriented leadership, and ability to work across boundaries while building strong relationships

  • Ability to navigate through a complex and dynamic healthcare environment

  • Executive-level oral and written communication skills

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $231,000 - $289,000 plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
