Executive Director, External Engagement & Enablement

The Executive Director, External Engagement & Enablement will provide strategic direction for dissemination of all global internal and external Medical Communications through optimized personalized and non-personalized channels to enable internal readiness for external engagement with Healthcare Providers, Patients, and Payers worldwide. S/he will strategically partner with Commercial in the areas of Customer engagement, WW Engagement Planning, and WW Omni-channel execution to ensure pull-through of the Scientific Narrative. Driving new innovation will require collaboration with Compliance, Legal, and Corporate Affairs to ensure that all activities are conducted in a compliant manner with BMS policies, procedures, and local regulatory/legal requirements.

S/he will report to the VP of Scientific Communications & Engagement (SCE) and lead a team that will develop personalized approach to external engagement with HCPs, patients, and payers. The incumbent is expected to have experience working with digital communications, interfacing with customers to understand their needs, and ensuing satisfaction. S/he will be accountable for optimizing Medical’s external-facing capabilities (i.e., Contact Center, Congress strategy, Medical Education, Field Medical excellence) by leveraging social media insights and innovative approaches to deliver scientific communications to the right audience through the right channel at the right time.

S/he will apply enterprise mindset and lead strategically across the BMS matrix by working with stakeholders from WW medical and local market medical teams, Research & Early Development (R&ED), Global Drug Development (GDD), Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR), Global Biometric Sciences (GBS), Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Corporate Affairs, Competitive Intelligence, Legal, Business Insights & Analytics (BI&A), Strategic Sourcing & Procurement (SS&P) and other key functions. As a core member of the SCE Leadership Team, the Executive Director, External Engagement & Experience is accountable for the following:

External Engagement & Experience Strategy:

  • Understanding the landscape and voice of the customer to tailor and personalize approaches to external engagement using digital and traditional communication channels.
  • Provide leadership through story-telling that translates BMS science into patient care and enables internal readiness for external engagement.
  • Leverage data analytics to drive decision making; inform senior leaders on approaches to delivering medical communications in the most impactful way.
  • Lead and oversee external Medical customer communications strategy for assisted and self-service channels, medical information and safety intake (adverse event and product quality compliant) for all BMS medicines worldwide.
  • Accountable for driving integrated cross-functional strategic approach to BMS engagement at congresses to align with portfolio planning and pipeline prioritization for next 1-3 years.
  • Evolve technology and digital strategy to meet local market business needs through personalized omni-channel approach.
  • Enable optimal utilization of systems (DataVision, Veeva, etc.) by Field Medical and other Medical functions in close partnership with Information Technology.
  • Responsible for providing medical insight, guidance, strategy, and training to Medical and Commercialization contact center partners (both external and internal) to ensure delivery of timely and high-quality information for safe and appropriate use of our medicines.
  • Lead internal process improvements to ensure BMS remains an ethical and credible leader in the practice of Medical Communications, ensure BMS channels standards are aligned with industry standards, and all BMS employees engaged in dissemination of Medical Communications follow GxP guidance with the highest degree of integrity, quality, and transparency.

Data Dissemination:

  • Improve patient outcome by enabling HCPs with easier access to high quality trusted scientific information that addresses their inquiries.
  • Drive and own the strategy for leveraging personal & non-personal channels (social media) and social media listening to broaden reach of our scientific communications.
  • Provide accurate, informative, and timely responses to unsolicited scientific requests from healthcare providers and patients for all BMS products in accordance with Company Policies, and applicable local laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Manage the staffing of Medical Information exhibition booths at regional meetings, medical conferences and congresses to facilitate the provision of responds to unsolicited requests from healthcare professionals with accurate and balanced information.
  • Sets standards for global Field Medical activities and impact metrics for Senior Leaders including Commercial General Managers (GMs) and Country Medical Directors (CMDs).
  • Ensures BMS’s legal and regulatory responsibilities for the medical information participation in Pharmacovigilance procedures are met (i.e., Adverse Events reporting).
  • Pull through therapeutic area Patient strategy through patient insights and innovative solutions while working with corporate communications to ensure broader distribution through social media.

Impact Assessment:

  • Leverage external insights to enhance experience of patients, HCPs, and payers.
  • Establish clear metrics based on voice of the customer analysis (through Field Medical, Contact Center, Congresses, and Social Listening) to demonstrate impact on meeting customer needs. Regularly communicates metrics with key stakeholders.
  • Apply innovative approaches to keep BMS Medical Communications in the forefront of advancing the science and maximizing BMS product value for our customers.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Foster collaborative relationships with medical associations and other relevant stakeholder groups. Participate in external initiatives to demonstrate leadership and CoE and influence standard practices across the industry.
  • Evaluate external capabilities to complement internal capabilities when appropriate to deliver on our dynamic portfolio across all markets.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across the matrix and other Scientific Communications & Engagement leadership (i.e., Medical Communications, Training & Compliance) to ensure efficiency and value.

People Management:

  • Build and lead a team of leaders organized by channel capabilities, focused on optimizing external engagement with HCPs, Patients, and Payers and informing clinical practice by leveraging digital innovation and personalized and non-personalized channels to drive our business.
  • Drive a high-performance culture by fostering innovation, collaboration, customer focus, personal accountability and a commitment for results.
  • Lead a team that works closely with the TAs, country & regional medical and commercial teams, and other matrix partners as listed above to ensure Medical Communications objectives are met, address challenges, and find solutions related to capability, technology, and standards.
  • Partner with agencies and contracted employees to ensure optimal balance of full-time and outsourced resources.
  • Ensure diversity and inclusion in decision making, organization, talent, and career development.

Technical Skills

  • Advance degree in science, business, and/or Healthcare industry experience.
  • Marketing savvy with experience with social media to provide the right communication to the right HCP at the right time.
  • In-depth knowledge in the pharmaceutical industry, external compliance, transparency, and conflict-of-interest, Medical Information, and customer engagement functions.
  • Use of information sources, management information systems and databases.
  • Electronic communication vehicles and information technology to streamline information management and delivery of Medical Information services.
  • Strong understanding of compliance and Code of Practice, Copyright issues and other legal and regulatory aspects of Medical Information. Understanding of the regulations and guidelines governing the supply, marketing, and advertising of drugs in country of operation.
  • Networks with internal and external contacts to keep up to date with issues, developments, technological changes and evaluates these for implications and implementation where relevant to the business (e.g., PhactMI, MAPS).
  • Knowledge of financial management processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 10 – 15 years of Pharmaceutical/Healthcare industry experience with a focus on global knowledge management, customer experience, and external engagement.
  • At least 5 years of experience of leading a large commercialization function; medical preferred.
  • Position requires exceptional business acumen, ability to think strategically, and influence senior executives to make trade-off decisions and drive business priorities to support existing product portfolio and launches of new products.
  • Advanced leadership skills, experience in managing global/virtual teams, understanding of Research and Drug Development portfolio, and the ability to communicate data in an impactful way.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use, design, implementation, and application of IT for information services provision.
  • Experience in managing relationships with suppliers and service providers to deliver customer-focused services
  • Proven experience establishing strategic direction/vision for an organization, and proven ability to implement such vision; ability to take educated risk, rise above technical expertise; demonstrating judgement, wisdom and understanding of impact.
  • Proven experience in building new capabilities, right-sizing existing teams, leading high-performing teams through change.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions, decision-making with cross-functional and cross-cultural teams, challenge status quo, ability to influence and negotiate appropriate solutions, experience in project managing multiple priorities under tight time constraints and proven ability to establish strong stakeholder relationships (internal and external).
  • Effective communication, strong matrix leadership management, and enterprise mindset.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 10 – 15% of time.
