Description

Work in a team environment in providing basic and applied research efforts for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command-Chemical Biological Center (CCDC CBC), Agent Chemistry Branch in basic and applied research efforts for the development, test, and evaluation of novel military specific chemical and biological products. Research efforts require the synthesis of chemical compounds to include chemical warfare agents (CWAs), their precursors, and degradation products. Additional support efforts will include utilizing existing synthesis processes and will include the investigation and development of new chemical synthesis routes. Synthesized products are characterized for product purity.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs chemical synthesis activities in accordance with DEVCOM CBC defined procedures and protocols. For new techniques and/or synthesis of select agents, work with a team of researchers to design and implement synthesis strategies.

  • Works under the direct supervision of first-line supervisor

  • Performs analyses and characterization via an array of instrumentation to include Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and GC-Mass Selective Detection.

  • Identifies bulk and trace level reaction intermediates and products

  • Perform duties in compliance with chemical hygiene plan (CHP)

  • Work in a team environment and contribute to technical research reports

  • Performs other duties assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with 2 or more years relative work experience in chemical synthesis and/or analyses

  • Demonstrated experience in NMR and GC-MS.

  • Demonstrated experience in chemical synthesis and product characterization.

  • Must be able to obtain DoD “Secret” Clearance (US Citizenship Required)

  • Must be able to meet qualifications for enrollment into the U.S. Army’s Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (C-PRP)

  • Effective communication and research writing skills

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, to include an air purifying respirator.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in working with chemical warfare agents, simulants, toxic industrial materials, and/or toxic industrial chemicals.

  • Demonstrated experience in method optimization of historically low-yield synthesis mechanisms

  • Method development and method optimization

  • Currently possess a DoD Secret Clearance

  • Previous Department of Defense research project support

Pay Range:

Pay Range $46,800.00 - $72,000.00 - $97,200.00
