Job Summary

Installs, configures, and troubleshoots computer networks and associated assemblies by performing the following duties. Installs, modifies, and makes minor repairs to microcomputer hardware and software systems and provides technical assistance and training to system users by performing the following duties.

Essential Responsibilities:

1.Performs network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common network problems.
2.Upgrades network hardware and software components as required.
3.Installs, upgrades, and configures network printing, directory structures, rights, security, and software on file servers.
4.Provides users with network technical support.
5.Responds to the needs and questions of users concerning their access of resources on the network.
6.Establishes network users, user environment, directories, and security for networks being installed.
7.Inspects microcomputer equipment and reads order sheet listing user requirements to prepare microcomputer for delivery.
8.Installs or assists service personnel in installation of hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers, and disk drives on user's premises.
9.Loads specified software packages such as operating systems, word processing, or spreadsheet programs into computer.
10.Enters commands and observes system functions to verify correct system operation. Instructs user in use of equipment, software, and manuals.
11.Answers customer inquiries in person and via telephone concerning systems operation. Diagnoses system hardware, software, and operator problems. Recommends or performs minor remedial actions to correct problems based on knowledge of system operation.
12.Replaces defective or inadequate software packages.
13.Refers major hardware problems to service personnel for correction.
14.Attends technical conferences and seminars to keep abreast of new software and hardware product developments.
15.Performs research for appropriate hardware and software requirements.
16.Writes reports/makes presentations to upper management on networking issues.
17.Advices management personnel on new technologies and systems requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates Degree and at least 5 years of job-related experience
  • At least two years experience in network administration with Novell NetWare and/or Windows NT.
  • A thorough knowledge of networking principles to include internet protocols (primarily Novell NetWare and TCP/IP protocol suites) and operating systems, network hardware/software components and their use/configurations (NICs, transmission media, hubs, repeaters, bridges, routers, gateways), and knowledge of network diagnostic principles.


Preferred Qualifications

Vendor certification (CNA, CNE, MCSE) desirable, but not required.
