Facilities Maintenance/HVAC Technician

Amentum is seeking an Facilities Maintenance Technician/HVAC Technician for our operations and maintenance team in Richmond, VA.

Your typical work schedule will be Monday-Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm, but various hours may be required based on business demand.

You will report directly to the Site Operations Manager and will be responsible for providing an advanced level expertise in responding to work orders, troubleshooting, and providing preventive maintenance on the facility equipment and systems for a large research facility and Central Utility Plant (CUP).


As the Facilities Maintenance Technician, your daily duties for this role will include:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot industrial facility and/or production equipment and systems such as HVAC, Compressors, Chillers, pumps, bearings, blowers, fans, gearboxes, air handlers, and other equipment as required.

  • Perform all aspects of preventive and corrective electrical and mechanical maintenance on all facility and production related industrial systems including HVAC, plumbing, pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyor systems, filtration systems, and coolant systems.

  • Utilize the building automation system to track and adjust building conditions and the operation of facilities equipment.

  • Assist lower level technicians with work assignments and coach as appropriate.

  • Provide input to work instructions for equipment and recommend improvements to equipment reliability and performance.

  • Utilize strong mechanical and electrical skills in order to complete assignments.

  • Respond and provide service and feedback to the customer on all assigned work orders while assuring compliance to codes, regulations, and industry standards.

  • Understand company policies and safely perform functions of the position, including following proper safety guidelines such as task hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, rigging and lifting techniques, and wearing PPE as required.

  • Operate various measuring, diagnostic, and testing instruments to help provide energy efficiency solutions.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or demonstrated equivalent.

  • Five years of experience as an industrial maintenance technician or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must be self-motivated and demonstrate the strong organizational/time management skills needed to be successful in this role.

  • Operate a variety of equipment such as hand tools, laptop computers, iPad, and other diagnostic hardware to perform work.

  • Understand and apply basic theory of refrigeration systems.

  • Work with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals, specifications, drawings, and schematic diagrams.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to clearly articulate key operational principles.

  • Ability to obtain site specific security access including all applicable background checks.

  • Ability to work overtime, holidays, various shifts, weekends, and alternative work schedules.

  • Ability to obtain an appropriate driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, as requested.

  • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.

  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.

Some physical/special requirements include:

  • Regularly lift to 50 lbs

  • Regularly climb ladders, steps, and scaffolding

  • Repetitive motions: bend, stoop, squat, kneel, stretch, reach, wrist movement

  • Walk or ride bicycle extensively throughout the plant during shift

  • Work at an accelerated pace in emergency conditions

  • Ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding

  • Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.

  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) environment or utilizing a CMMS mobile device. Maximo experience is a plus.

  • Experience with Metasys building automation system.

  • Technical training in Industrial Technology, Industrial HVAC, Industrial Electrical, Industrial Mechanical, or related technical program or equivalent.

  • Associate degree in HVAC, industrial mechanical, industrial electrical, or a related skilled trade.

  • Experience working with steam systems (e.g. high pressure steam boilers), centrifugal chillers, air handling units, cooling towers, air compressors, air dryers, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, VAV pneumatic controls, and energy management systems (building automation control systems).

  • EPA Universal certification.

  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) knowledge.

  • Experience reading dials, monitoring equipment, and entering data into computer software.

  • Experience utilizing measurement tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, various type gauges, and calibers to set tolerances to OEM Specifications.
