Reliability Engineer I

Amentum, in support of the National Weather Service's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) located at Stennis Space Center (SSC) Mississippi, is currently seeking a Reliability Engineer I. NDBC provides quality observations in the marine environment to support the understanding of and predictions to changes in weather, climate, oceans, and coasts. NDBC designs, engineers, fabricates/integrates, tests, deploys, maintains/repairs 4 worldwide buoy systems: 106 Weather Buoy Stations, 43 Coastal Observation (C-MAN) stations, 55 Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean Array (TAO) systems, and 39 Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) stations. Program scope also includes data analysis/storage/dissemination (via website/other means) of related weather and environmental data from these systems (25%) and other sources (75%) of in-situ weather data, Logistics, Information Technology/Data Administration, and Programming.

The National Data Buoy Center Reliability Engineer I is responsible for developing and maintaining a reliability program at NDBC that identifies equipment issues, categorizes most likely causes and impacts of these issues, and provides feedback/recommendations to the Team to implement corrective actions. The Candidate will be a technology system-oriented engineer, who can examine NDBC engineering processes in the marine electromechanical manufacturing space. The candidate should be skilled in statistical analysis of failure modes in the design, prototype development, transition to production, operation, and maintenance of government specified meteorological and science instrumentation packages designed to collect and transmit data in marine environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with NDBC stakeholders to establish what elements should be incorporated into a NDBC reliability program.

  • Develop what system metrics should be monitored and establish a methodology for assessment of those equipment metrics and the periodicity for performing the assessments-Perform periodic assessments and produce reports documenting the results and recommendations.

  • Originates and develops analysis methods to determine reliability of components, systems, and associated processes.

  • Acquires and analyzes reliability data. Prepares diagrams, charts, drawings, calculations and reports to define reliability problems and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Conducts analysis of reliability problems and investigates to determine the required reliability approach for a particular situation-Evaluates current and in process system designs to identify potential obsolescence issues-Determines cost advantages of alternatives and develops action plans that comply with internal/external customer demands for reliable processes/equipment to avoid failures.

Requirements:

  • Background in Statistics.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication and presentation abilities.

  • Troubleshooting/analytical expertise and attention to detail.

  • At least 2 years’ experience in reliability, maintainability, or lifecycle analysis of operational systems and equipment (preferred).

  • Familiarity with operation and maintenance of complex, autonomous instrumentation, data acquisition, and communications systems operating in the marine environment or other austere environments (preferred).

  • Experience in safety and environmental compliance, management of controlled technology, and quality management processes (preferred).

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering Discipline
