We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with demonstrated experience in working in modern software development methodologies and understanding DoD software development policies, issues, and priorities. This position will support the Naval Surface Warfare Center and focus on bringing modern software engineering processes and best practices to DoD programs and policies, all to improve outcomes for the warfighter. It is necessary to have worked in C++ development in the last few years to define and clarify why and how to merge implementation of certain software fixes among several software teams.

You'll have the opportunity to design, implement, scale and manage infrastructure related software defects completed by several other teams, while improving reliability and reducing toil for our engineering teams. To excel in this job, you must be a competent at developing and maintaining software as well as being passionate about infrastructure at scale.

Software Engineer, Senior DOD Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, create, and manage high-performance infrastructure and tooling for external and internal code base sections.

  • Provide systems for infrastructure provisioning, observability, deployment, and defect tracking that serve all engineering teams.

  • Be an architectural “consultant” and software expert to product teams at the design stage of their features and services.

  • Identify inefficiencies, risks, and reliability issues, and write high-leverage tools to tackle them.

  • Provide technical overview without writing the infrastructure related software.

The impact you will have in 6 months:

  • Be an active voice that contributes on defining team roadmap.

  • Reduce alert fatigue by participating in strategy sessions followed up by accurate technical documentation

The impact you will have in 12 months:

  • Lead infrastructure transformational projects for a Major ACAT I DOD weapon system

  • Be a go-to person for one or more areas such as infrastructure, configuration management, automation, software capability improvements linked to defect resolutions

Primary work location will be in Fredericksburg, VA or Dahlgren, VA with occasional telecommute or travel opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications and experience:

  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Secret security clearance (at a minimum, must receive/be approved for an interim Secret security clearance in order to start) Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a SECRET Clearance.

  • Bachelor’s degree requires 12 years of experience. Master’s Degree is a bonus but not required.

  • 5 years software development experience or equivalent research experience.

  • Experience performing software design, code, and testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Any DOD experience in programs or operations.

  • Experience with writing code in C++ in the past 5 years.

  • Experience architecting and maintaining systems in a solid quality Agile environment using Agile toolsets

  • Experience with modern metrics, monitoring, and logging frameworks and services.
