Fire Control Engineer

This position is located in Dulmen Germany

As an essential member of the U.S. Army's weapons maintenance team, the Fire Control Engineer is responsible for maintaining the fire control systems for Multiple Launch Rocket System, Multiple Launch Rocket System: (MLRS) M270a1 Improved Launcher and the AVENGER System in the Army Pre-Positon Stock in Germany. This position Manages/Supervises and performs field and sustainment level maintenance on the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270, M270A1, High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), the self-propelled launcher-loader (SPLL), launcher pod/container (L/PC) trainer and the test support group. Employs digital switching theory, logic, computer fundamentals and infrared fundamentals applicable to the Army’s missile systems and associated equipment. Has been responsible for the operation of maintenance support teams and field level maintenance facilities.

Fire Control Engineer will monitor unit status reporting requirements for tactical missile units and associated support elements. Supervised maintenance and repair job organic tools, test sets, associated training equipment. Fire Control Engineer will estimate supply requirements, observed work practices, and detects and corrects improper procedures and techniques. Initiated and monitored reporting of discrepancy (ROD), quality discrepancy report (QDR), and engineering changes proposal (ECP) documents. Fire Control Engineer will ensure personnel adhere to maintenance schedules, The Army Maintenance Management Systems (TAMMS), Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) procedures, Standard Army Maintenance System - Enhanced (SAMS-E) and Global Combat Support System- Army (GCSS-A). Inspects, trains other personnel and performs organizational, intermediate and depot level electronic maintenance/modification on contract units, subsystems and other weapon system components and support equipment. Advises other team members and solves unusual electronics problems by analysis and tests on missile, armaments, engines, fire control systems, electronic, and electrical systems.


The Fire Control Engineer has these specific responsibilities:

  • Determine malfunctions in electronics, electrical and cryogenic assemblies, module and circuit elements.

  • Maintain gyroscopes, sights and other electro-optical fire control components.

  • Repair and maintain missile mounts, platforms and launch mechanisms.

  • Test and adjust weapons firing, guidance and launch systems.

  • Inspect, test and adjust components.

  • Remove and replace defective line units.

  • Determine malfunctions in electronics, electrical and cryogenic assemblies, module and circuit elements.

  • Maintain gyroscopes, sights and other electro-optical fire control components.

  • Repair and maintain missile mounts, platforms and launch mechanisms.

  • Test and adjust weapons firing, guidance and launch systems.

  • Applies advanced technical knowledge to solve unusually complex problems that typically cannot be solved solely be referencing manufacturers' manuals or similar documents including determining the location and density of circuitry, evaluating electromagnetic radiation, isolating malfunctions, and incorporating engineering changes.

  • Requires a detailed understanding of the interrelationships of circuits.

  • Exercises independent judgment in performing such tasks as making circuit analyses, calculation of wave forms, and tracing relationships in signal flow.

  • Uses common and complex test instruments such as digital multi-meters, signal generators, semiconductor testers, curve tracers, oscilloscopes, high frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and complex computer control equipment.

  • Work may be reviewed by the Quality department for general compliance with accepted practices.

  • Provides technical guidance to lower level technicians.

  • Acts as a Special Technical Advisor to Maintenance Manager. Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to situations where risk of electrical shock and vibration exist. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of recent specialized experience; OR Associate degree plus 7 years of recent specialized experience; OR a major certification plus 7 years of recent specialized experience; OR at least 10 years of maintenance level supervisory experience (Fire Control Systems) and comprehensive knowledge of applicable U.S. Army regulations, policies, and procedures.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • U.S. citizenship.

  • U.S. SECRET security clearance.

  • Appropriate verbal and written communication skills to conduct meetings, execute plans, and prepare reports, plans, and working instructions

  • Must be able to qualify for and operate Government-provided light vehicles.

  • Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).

  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.

ADDITIONAL DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:

Hands-on knowledge of U.S. Army logistics systems to include AWRDS, or Global Combat Support System – Army (GCSS-Army).
