Purpose and Scope

Perform a variety of water and fire system engineering assignments in project development, design, operations, installation, and maintenance of systems such as: water distribution, wastewater, plumbing, fire suppression, fire/water pumping and sound suppression systems.

Job Duties and Essential Responsibilities

Perform a range of design development, analysis or review tasks under minimal supervision. Support Facility Fire/booster pump shop technicians and operators as needed for assigned systems. Troubleshoot and provide technical expertise for technical anomalies as they arise. Witness annual fire pump test runs at miscellaneous facilities. Analyze data and provide reports of pump curves and operation. Address and justify preventive maintenance deferrals of fire pumps, water booster pumps, fire suppression systems and sound suppression systems. Revise and add new asset information in Maximo database for fire pumps, booster pumps, sound suppression systems and equipment and fire suppression systems per MAR (Maintenance Action Request) process. Provide input to and actively participate in applicable System Health and Readiness Program (SHARP) teams. Coordinate and work closely with requester, other engineering, logistics, financial, and program management disciplines to define system specifications and requirements. Develop, maintain and produce technical documentation and system/subsystem specifications. Direct interface and liaison with internal and external customers at all levels from concept to final design and commissioning activities, design reviews and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements and specifications. Conduct site visits, experimental investigations and analyze engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives, and provide recommendations. Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures. Support development of technical proposal and provide comments on the technical content (i.e. review proposed designs by others) and level of effort of the proposed scope of work. May support development of technical proposal and provide comments on the technical content and level of effort of the proposed scope of work. Develop task order requirements to NASA to complete Operations & Maintenance Documentation (OMD) updates per specific, contracted timeframes. OMD updates could be on drawings or job plans for specifically water, sound suppression and fire pumping systems. Coordinate and communicate effectively with CAD drafters, Design Engineers, or shop personnel by written or verbal means. Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related scientific field and minimum of 5 years of job-related experience or equivalent. Good communications and analytical skills. NICET level 2 certification in water-based systems is preferred. Working knowledge of NFPA 20 and 25 is preferred.

Position may require travel. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.

Other Requirements:

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

  • Must have dexterity to perform all duties required (office/field locations) by the position to include (but not limited to), standing, walking, using hands, stretching, stooping, kneeling, etc.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
