Scope:

The Area Engineering Manager (AEM) is the engineering manager/engineering delivery lead for a logical arrangement (grouping) of specific EUPMF systems (loops, SSCs, functionality) and/or the underpinning manufacturing processes that are required to function together to safely deliver the required functionality (the AREA).

The key dimensions of the job are to 1) provide leadership and direction and 2) ensure that the multidiscipline team(s) supporting the AREA integrate and work effectively to deliver the engineering solution(s) that that supports specific project requirements.

It is a pragmatic, proactive and empowered role that always looks to build highly effective teams, faces the end user as the engineering Area Lead, balances the possibly conflicting demands of stakeholders and ensures that engineering deliverables are compatible with the expectations of the clients management systems and good practice.

Description:

The AEM acts on behalf of the lead Project/Programme Engineering Manager for their Areas and ensures that the project delivers assured engineering to the appropriate safety, requirements, quality, cost and schedule expectations / needs.

The AEM works with the discipline designers and other engineering leads to ensure that the safe and appropriate ALARP balance is maintained between ‘doing the right thing’ and ‘doing it right’ (i.e. the pragmatic ALARP delivery vs preferential code interpretations balance).

The AEM contributes to the design delivery strategies, the design and engineering control arrangements and the management of their delivery.

The AEM works with other AEMs to define, manage and deliver the area and system interfaces in accordance with the developed project design and engineering arrangements and protocols and ensures that the engineering function is delivered in a joined up, E-2-E vision.

The AEM exercises good judgement to effectively identify /manage / mitigate engineering delivery risks (both internal and external to the project); taking action where necessary and agreed with the project engineering lead to reduce the impacts of risks.

The AEM is the project focus point for ensuring that project requirements for their Area are delivered in a manner that meets clients expectations and ensures that the supporting Lifetime Quality Records (LTQRS) are robust.

The AEM is part of a core engineering lead team that collectively covers the entirety of the engineering and supporting assurance scope for the programme.

The AEM interfaces with the IPT design team, suppliers, the client team, SME and TA community and ensures that there is a joined up delivery vision across the stakeholders.

Accountable for:

  • Delegates for the Lead Project / Programme Engineering Manager where necessary.

  • The management, integration and delivery of safe, assured and integrated (end-2-end) multidiscipline design activities to deliver the project requirements as defined in the Project Requirement Document (PRDs) for their responsible systems /areas.

  • Is in control of the delivery programme (schedule) for their Areas and informs/ mitigates/ reduces the risks associated with its delivery

  • The escalation of issues when appropriate for resolution by the Lead Project / Programme Engineering Manager

  • Integration of the engineering solution with the expectations of the AWE IC, Technical Authorities (TAs) and the relevant Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)

  • Contributing to engineering delivery strategy / influencing the procurement strategy for optimum delivery with appropriately managed risks

  • Ensures that engineering is performed in accordance with the relevant quality controls/plans/expectations established for the design and engineering

  • Ensures that the engineering activities are delivered by the relevant multidiscipline teams to the AWE quality standards/DSPs/MSPs, and the deliverables meet the engineering expectations and the Class of the relevant SSCs

  • The delivery of the robust management and delivery of the interfaces between their Areas and other Areas

  • Ensuring that the multidiscipline teams deliver the requisite substantiation supporting the design for their Areas.

  • To assure the application of generally accepted good engineering practice, relevant Learning from Experience (LfE) and any personal discipline specific experience to Area

  • Monitors, resolves and escalates where necessary any variances.

Experience / Professional requirements

  • Ideally hold a degree in relevant Engineering discipline

  • Demonstrates experience of leadership and delivery of complex engineering systems within the nuclear capital project delivery environment

  • Holds Professional membership of an appropriate UK professional body (Chartered)

  • Assessed as SQEP for the delegated accountabilities and responsibilities.
