Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Perform general environmental and/or safety support services, investigations and analyses and other directed assignments as either a member of a team or as an investigator.

Essential Responsibilities:

1) Perform analytical, regulatory, and scientific investigative studies related to ecology or environmental science.
2) Review literature and regulations in the fields of environment, and critiques content and conclusions.
3) Analyze data gathered from literature or collected from investigations.
4) Develop reports required by environmental regulations or permits.
5) Review statutory requirements related to one or more environmental, safety and/or health regulations, and assess facility or programmatic compliance.
6) Participate in informal reviews, inspections, and audits using established procedures.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Typical office environment with no unusual hazards, occasional lifting to 20 pounds, occasional field work, sitting while using the computer terminal, use of sight abilities while reviewing documents, use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, mental alertness, must posses planning/organizing skills, and must be able to work under deadlines.

There will be field work primarily associated with waste sampling, waste management, and waste inspections. Weekly underground inspections will occur at the WIPP facility in the mine 2150 feet below the surface as well as on the surface.

Management of a hazardous waste facility permit, NSR air permit, and a discharge permit are essential for day to day operations. Assessment of NEPA requirements for projects performed outside the Site fence line is needed occasionally.

The work location is located at the WIPP Facility, a 45 mile (45 minute) commute from Carlsbad or Hobbs New Mexico.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in ES&H-related field, i.e., Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or other sciences. 5 years of position related experience. Working knowledge in various environmental areas such as RCRA, Clean Air Act, NEPA, Clean Water Act, and Clean Drinking Water Act is necessary. Good written communication skills; working knowledge of word-processing and integrated software applications; organizational skills and ability to perform detail-oriented work are required. Position may require travel. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
