Entry Level Financial Litigation Assistant

  • The Contractor shall be responsible for financial litigation support necessary to assist with meeting the needs of the Financial Litigation Unit, which including develops, analyzes, and evaluates information regarding debtors’ financial assets.
  • The Contractor provides support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs):
    • Creates, organizes and manages physical case files and other related documents and materials.
    • Inputs data into case tracking systems and generates reports.
    • Prepares required legal instruments (i.e., document demands, interrogatories, requests for admission, inspection demands) and coordinates debtor exams, oral depositions and witness statements as required.
    • Examines and evaluates information provided in case files.
    • Makes recommendations to AUSAs based on factual and legal research of individual cases.
    • Assists with posting of payments and internal controls.
  • The Contractor reviews debt claims for compliance with the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act:
    • Provides technical processing activities associated with debt collection for both criminal and civil debts.
    • Drafts and/or prepares letters, forms, and reports necessary to initiate and follow through on the collection of debts.
    • Conducts skip-tracing activity when necessary to locate debtors, using own discretion in determining those techniques and any follow up needed to locate the debtor.
    • Reviews and reconciles computerized debt collection printouts with office collection records.
    • With direction, performs basic computer research on as needed basis (e.g. running Lexis financial reports on individuals, running credit bureaus, reviewing unemployment database, etc.).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain a government security clearance.
  • Requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in Legal related field (Paralegal Studies, criminal justice, jurisprudence, pre-law, legal studies, etc.) and at least 1 year of legal experience performing legal assistant type and administrative type roles; A paralegal certificate is also highly valued and will be considered in combination with experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Requires working knowledge of personal networked computers, including Windows 10, MS Office Suite, and networked printers.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, databases, and general administrative office skills required.
  • Must have strong organizational, task management skills and interpersonal skills that facilitate collaboration between the U.S. Attorney's Office, federal agencies, U.S. Probation Office, and Clerk of the Court.
  • Skill in applying complex legal principles and concepts, legal research methods and data analysis techniques required.
  • Ability to use, understand and maintain directories, personnel lists and other guides and references to provide a variety of information on the office and to refer questions to other offices.
  • Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Must have valid driver's license and ability to drive a vehicle.
  • Requires understanding of the legal system.
  • Requires skill in operating a computer terminal, personal computer, electronic typewriter, or dedicated word processor using a standard typewriter style keyboard with additional function keys to produce a wide range of documents.
  • Understanding of and direct experience with using legal research databases such as Lexis, WestLaw etc. · Candidates must be comfortable working onsite, fulltime, at the Louisville, KY location.
