Industrial Safety and Hygiene Specialist III

Under limited supervision, the Industrial Safety and Hygiene (IS&H) Specialist III is responsible for implementing and administering project industrial safety and hygiene programs affecting employee, public safety and occupational health. Serves as a resource for line management to administer a proactive prevention program for occupational accidents and illnesses; under limited supervision performs moderately complex technical work in a wide range of IS&H disciplines to achieve compliance with ES&H standards along with federal and state regulatory requirements; exhibits knowledge and applies advanced concepts, practices and procedures of IS&H; develops, implements and maintains IS&H programs, systems and procedures; monitors and prevents hazards and diseases that could be found in the work area; investigates accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning hazards in the workplace; recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures and operating equipment to minimize hazards; develops and conducts employee training, emergency preparedness and assures the quality of programs; provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice; may provide guidance for a team of ES&H specialists and/or support personnel. This position may require shift work (rotating 4 x 12 schedule) including night shift to support plant operations.

This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS

  • Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the enviornment.

  • Provides technical assistance to office and field operations to ensure compliance with applicable international, Federal, State, and/or Company health and safety regulations.

  • Conducts compliance evaluations of equipment, structures, and work in progress to ensure that regulatory environmental, safety and health standards of the Company and all applicable codes are followed.

  • Recommends facilities and technological specifications to carry out programs that fulfill the organization's overall objectives.

  • Identifies workplace hazards throughout operations and maintenance activities in an operating industrial facility.

  • Develops appropriate hazard controls and mitigation strategies and provides oversight of work activities to ensure controls are effectively implemented.

  • Supports worker safety and health needs, including injury and event response and case management.

  • Ensures effective implementation of safety and health rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Actively participates in pre-task and safety meetings.

  • Performs incident/event investigations and prepares associated reports.

  • Maintains current knowledge of specific government agency requirements.

  • Determines and develops approaches to solutions.

  • Assists with the development, implementations and maintenance of safety and health programs, systems and procedures.

  • Prepares and reviews technical reports, correspondence, and program compliance

  • Establishes and maintains permits as required.

  • Meets applicable regulatory codes and standards where required.

  • Assists in the development of IS&H training programs and conducts IS&H training meetings as necessary.

  • Performs analysis of IS&H data.

  • Trains and assists subordinate IS&H specialists in sampling and assessment methodologies.

  • Conducts and assists projects with sampling, monitoring, data interpretation and occupational health surveys to ensure compliance with established programs.

  • IS&H Specialists III are expected to pursue and/or complete a professional certification, such as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).

Education: BS/MS in Occupational Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related science or engineering field.

Appropriate training and experience commensurate with the responsibilities of the position may be considered in lieu of a degree:

10 years related experience to the position and 20 semester credit hours in technical subjects related to the position OR Completion of 80 semester credit hours in technical subjects related to the position.

Experience: Minimum 7-10 years or MS degree + 3-7 years’ experience in a nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processingorpetroleumrefiningenvironment.

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is preferred.

Experience in a nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processing or petroleum refining environment is preferred.

Experience in an operating facility is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(SHNM-ISH) Safety and Health Non-Manual Industrial Safety & Hygiene

Performs desk work, including writing, computer, etc. in support of line management safety and health needs. Review and generation of Safety and Health reports, records, etc. Development/management of Safety and Health process/procedure, training, metrics, etc. Perform Safety and Health surveillances and assessments.

Records generation, instrumentation and equipment management, and other industrial safety/hygiene functions. Oversights and mentors Line Management and workers on the implementation of industrial safety/hygiene hazard controls. Responds to events providing injury/illness response, monitoring of conditions, etc. Hazard analysis and control determinations in support of project work activities. And conducts oversight and monitoring during work task performance to verify that exposure control mechanisms are sufficient to protect workers.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $87,988.37 - $136,835.09 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant internal equity, and alignment with market data.)

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and selected candidate must be willing and able to work a rotating shift schedule, 4 days on / 4 days off, 2 weeks days, 2 weeks nights
