As a Consultant within Heath Care Economics, you will be responsible for evaluating UHC’s efforts to both improve the quality and reduce the cost of health care for our members. The team helps to identify areas where quality or cost can be improved by combining evidence from UHC’s claims and authorization systems with insights provided by clinical experts within UHC.

As the Health Care Economics Consultant, you will design and develop reports and analyze data to measure clinical and financial outcomes. You will investigate key business problems through quantitative analyses of utilization and health care costs data. As the Consultant, you will interpret and analyze clinical data from various sources and recommend best approaches for its consolidation.

The Healthcare Economics Consultant will be on the forefront of efforts to develop more and better ways to keep UHC on the leading edge of providing quality health care at a reasonable price.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works with complex raw healthcare claims and clinical data, and recognizes data patterns and potential issues and makes recommendations
  • Performs analyses to determine effectiveness of clinical programs
  • Provides consultative advice and interprets and summarizes analytical findings
  • Researches, identifies, and implements new approaches and methods to improve the quality and cost of care
  • Leverages existing and ad-hoc reporting capabilities to identify trends in health plan performance and opportunities for medical expense reduction
  • Performs data extraction, aggregation, and quality checking from multiple sources and tables in support of trend identification, root cause analysis, affordability initiative development, and validation/measurement of medical expense reduction initiatives
  • Collaborates within and outside the Medical Informatics department, UHC, and UHG to lead the development and continuous improvement of methods, processes, and technologies to enhance healthcare quality, affordability, outcomes, and member/provider experience
  • Provides ongoing communications on project status, results, and conclusions from analyses
  • Maintain documentation and records of requests, custom specifications, versioning of deliverables and programs, and detail project status
  • Generally, work is self-directed, and serves as a resource to others

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree with emphasis in quantitative analysis such as healthcare economics, statistics, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, etc.
  • 4+ years of experience working with health care data and analyzing large healthcare data sets
  • 4+ years Advanced level of programming in SAS
  • Experience managing multiple competing priorities, non-negotiable timelines as well as high-frequency and quick turn-around requests
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, document, and communicate policies, analytical designs, and results to leadership, lay audiences, and analysts

Preferred Qualifcations:

  • Master's degree
  • Experience working with visualization tools like Microsoft Power BI
