Position Summary

Reporting to the VP, Purpose/ESG, the Director, Access to Healthcare, drives the development and implementation of strategic communication plans that promote BMS’ commitment to providing patients with access to our medicines and healthcare services around the world.

This role is responsible for developing a comprehensive communications strategy that demonstrates our intentional approach to enabling broad access to our medicines and healthcare services and our commitment to helping create a lasting impact for patients. This person will work closely with our internal business units to ensure the communications strategy is reflected in our corporate priorities and reflects the value BMS places on access to our medicines and, broadly healthcare services.

In this role, the individual will be accountable for building strong internal and external relationships with key partners and monitoring current events to understand how we can best communicate about our role to increase access to our medicines and healthcare services in earned, digital and paid media. The leader in this position will be responsible for shaping our access to our medicines and healthcare services narrative and creating a structured communications process including a yearly calendar of events, campaign activations and regular reporter outreach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing counsel and thought partnership on the importance of providing access to our medicines and healthcare services to cross functional teams, how to insert BMS’ responsibility and commitment to enable access into the broader healthcare discussion and finding opportunities to demonstrate the impact BMS’ access programs create throughout the world.
  • Craft an access to our medicines and healthcare services narrative and create a multi-channel communications strategy that proactively seeks new opportunities to broaden and deepen stakeholder engagement through media relations, multimedia, social media and events.
  • Leverage all internal and external communication opportunities, to establish BMS as an industry leader in driving innovative patient solutions for resource-challenged settings. In partnership with other functions, guide the creation of region/country specific presentations and narratives that demonstrate BMS’ unique partnerships and role in the broader healthcare landscape.
  • Enable BMS to have a leading voice and role in the topic of access around the world by executing strategies and tactics that raise awareness of our programs to key stakeholders including healthcare advocates, the philanthropic community, and press.
  • Engage with communications departments at key stakeholder organizations to insert BMS’ perspective, share key company initiatives as part of reputational/thought leadership efforts, and stay current about communications initiatives.
  • Increase visibility of our programs that expand access to our medicines and healthcare services through tactics such as thought leadership opportunities, speaking roles, sponsorships, partnerships, digital activations and key relationships.
  • Lead the development of strategic communication tools including a communications calendar, online commentary, one-pagers, press lists, infographics and digital content like stakeholder toolkits. This includes identifying and developing spokespeople for internal and external engagements on the topic of access.
  • Manage development and execution of materials including website content, fact sheets, message maps, briefings and presentations.
  • Work closely with Corporate Communications and other team on media and social media strategy and engagement, issues management and corporate positioning with a focus on access related communications.
  • Coordinate, gather and collate local, regional and global initiatives supporting our access efforts for inclusion in various communication materials, including the annual ESG report.
  • Drive employee engagement and communications, in partnership with HR, to reinforce how our approach to enabling access support patients around the world. Help create internal campaigns to shape our culture and help inspire our people.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 15+ years progressive experience in corporate communications with a focus on pricing, affordability, or market access in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, internal and external, through exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capable and experienced in providing communications counsel to senior management.
  • Demonstrated track record of driving successful communications strategies in a global, matrixed organization focused on access matters.
  • Experience developing communications plans aligning internal, external and stakeholder communications against business priorities.
  • Expertise in building integrated marketing communications programs, and driving outcomes across traditional media, digital and social channels.
  • Fluency with an array ESG indices including Global Reporting Initiative, Sustainability Accounting and Standards, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically as it related to access and affordability.
  • Deep experience coordinating collaborative efforts to develop and deliver qualitative and quantitative access related reporting, presenting data and trends in a clear and concise manner for stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to translate complex ideas gleaned from analyses into clear, compelling, and actionable insights through written narrative.
  • Calm and cool under pressure. Attention to detail is critical.
  • Strong, reliable judgement in handling sensitive content.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, listen and learn proactively, take initiative, and constantly seek ways to innovate and do things better.
  • Able to inspire trust, clarity, and consensus within a complex, fast-paced and changing environment.
