As a part of OptumHealth, OptumCare is seeking a Market President of Atrius Health. The Market President will serve as a member of the ­­­­OptumCare Executive leadership team and be accountable for the performance and results of Atrius Health, diverse and broad business and clinical functions through multiple layers of management. The President owns the output of the entire Atrius Health system made up of all related clinical and business processes and practices. This position is responsible for fostering a positive organizational culture, leading to high levels of provider and teammate satisfaction, as well as facilitating, developing, and executing the organization's mission and strategic plan and supporting initiatives. The Market President is a change leader, driving programs that impact markets of customers and consumers. Partners with peer market leaders both formally and informally, as well as with OptumCare national function leads, OptumCare and OptumHealth leadership, and key members of the broader Optum, UHC and UHG Leadership teams to drive financial, operational, and clinical performance in Atrius Health in a way that is balanced with broader strategic imperatives.

Candidate Qualifications and Skills:

  • Physician with solid business acumen/P&L ownership
  • Executive Operator with experience leading physicians
  • Progressive management experience in healthcare leadership, with a balanced focus on business and clinical operations, and patient satisfaction
  • Experienced in leading multi-market or large market, multi-specialty care delivery organization comprising both employed medical groups and IPAs, supporting diverse payer mix
  • Significant P&L accountability in an environment of high expected growth, both organic and inorganic
  • Solid visionary leadership skills and ability to execute that vision, including strategic thinking, business transformation, change leadership, organization design and effectiveness, product and service mix, incentive alignment
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial openness and ability to explore new possibilities and to approach issues differently; intellectually agile
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, prioritize, and evaluate market trends and specific growth opportunities, together with commercial acumen to negotiate favorable outcomes
  • Demonstrated business acumen; able to assess financial implications of decisions and actions; able to understand how strategies and tactics work in the marketplace and impact OptumCare
  • Analytical thinker with demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis, prepare and implement action plans, and lead improvement initiatives
  • Deep understanding of medical/clinical leader and staff needs, mindsets, motivations and dissatisfiers, together with ability to factor these into growth and operating plans in a corporate environment

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Creates overall strategic and execution plan for Atrius Health and assists in developing the OptumHealth enterprise strategic plan
  • Responsible for the successful financial performance of Atrius Health, including development and management of both capital and operating budgets, adjusting to changing circumstances to ensure in-year bottom-line commitments are made without compromising longer-term growth goals
  • Drives aggressive growth in-market, into new geographies and business lines, through a combination of acquisition (of employed medical groups and independent physician associations), partnership, recruitment, risk lives transfer, innovative contracting models (e.g., direct to large employer), leveraging Optum Health assets
  • Responsible for the successful transformation and change management moving the practice across the reimbursement continuum from not for profit to for profit status and from fee for service to value-based care through understanding and development of risk-based models of care. Continues to maximize value from fee for service book of business
  • Collaborates effectively with OptumCare National Function owners, OptumCare/OptumHealth leadership and others to optimize clinical and business operations, including the adoption of technology, data and analytics capabilities, adoption of best practice workflows, appropriate regionalization/centralization of clinical and business processes
  • Works with Regional and National clinical leadership to develop and execute plans around the improvement of clinical quality, service, and medical cost
  • Evolves Atrius Health structure, roles and responsibilities and operating model to optimize operations and maximize brand impact in support of provider and patient growth
  • Creates overall strategic and execution plan for local market and assist in developing the National strategic plan. Ensures adequate communication and execution across Atrius Health
  • Promotes, fosters, and develops a physician-led, patient-centric, team-based medicine culture, generating creating an atmosphere of trust and open dialogue across providers, other clinical and non-clinical staff, with a specific focus on provider wellbeing
  • Develops Physicians, Directors and Managers as leaders and ensures that they have the tools and skill sets to execute their operating plans and to assume greater responsibilities in their career development
  • Guides the development of the strategic marketing and public relations plans
  • Ensures strict compliance with federal and state regulations and company policies, procedures, and processes

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed US physician who has led a large group(s) of 250+ physicians, or if not a physician, then 10+ years of executive operator experience leading physician group(s) of 250 physicians or greater
  • 10+ years of experience leading a large physician group of 250+ preferably in a Risk Bearing Value Based Care Model in a non-hospital setting
  • 10+ years functioning in the capacity of either Chief Medical Officer, COO, CEO, Market President or equivalent in a large physician led (non-hospital) organization
  • 8+ years of experience working within a core executive leadership team as well as within both direct and matrixed reporting functions
  • P&L accountability for $100M in revenue or greater
  • Led M&A campaigns or operations for total assets of $50M or greater
  • Live within the MA market or be willing to relocate upon offer acceptance
  • Able to travel as needed both within the market and to Optum MN headquarters
  • This IS NOT a managed care or insurance product role. Have experience leading providers in an out-pt. care delivery model with a deep knowledge of operations, growth, and operational finance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA Degree or other equivalent Master’s level degree
  • Experience converting a healthcare organization or system from not for profit to pro profit status
  • Led an Independent Physician Association of 100 physicians or greater
