Director, Pharma Services Strategy will be part of a team who are responsible for identifying opportunities across the Life Science sector where Optum can provide new products and services, across the life cycle of a therapy. This would include the R&D phase, launch and post launch of new and existing therapies, especially in new innovations such as specialty, oncology and cell and gene therapy.

Responsibilities:
The role will take a strategic account management approach to working with the key manufacturers driving innovation over the next 5-10 years and identify what new products and services we can provide to ensure the right patient, gets the right therapy at the right time. The role will work across Optum to provide end-to-end solutions to these opportunities, making it easier for manufacturers to work with Optum. The role will define the product / service vision, deciding what problem to solve, for whom, and when. The role will be responsible for monitoring market trends, competitive analysis, and product viability and feasibility information—and use their research to create a product vision that will delight customers and offer a high ROI.

  • Identify appropriate stakeholders and decision-makers within the client organization
  • Establish productive relationships and clear lines of communications with relevant client stakeholders and decision-makers
  • Research, understand and anticipate the client's current and future business needs, challenges, and strategies (e.g., leveraging industry knowledge and experience)
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the client's business to identify new business opportunities (e.g., business goals, strategies, structures, processes)
  • Maintain ongoing contact with clients to identify and address emerging issues/concerns
  • Coordinate/facilitate communications between the client organization and internal teams (e.g., Sales, Technology, executive sponsors)

Sales
The role will have P&L responsibility. Using strategic account management, the role will create specific plans for specific manufacturers and be accountable for delivering top line sales as well as profit.

  • Develop business opportunities and grow revenue
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Optum's products, services, and competencies, and how they can be leveraged to meet the client's needs
  • Cultivate the client's perception of Optum as a trusted partner and strategic advisor (e.g., build credibility, demonstrate full understanding of their business, leverage other resources within Optum)
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to provide additional products and services that meet client needs (e.g., system enhancements, process changes)
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to leverage additional resources for existing client projects (e.g., project management, consulting resources, technologists)
  • Drive high levels of client satisfaction by focusing efforts on results that meet or exceed the client's expectations

Ability to work cross functionally
Given the breadth and diversity of Optum, a key part of the role will be to work with all the Optum business segments to create products that leverage existing capabilities, products, and services (as appropriate) as well as creating new products and services which fill gaps, to create value that is bigger than the sum of the parts. To do this, the role requires people with excellent project management skills, people skills, team working skills and ability to inspire diverse teams to work together towards a common goal.

  • Identify new business opportunities and communicate to appropriate internal teams (e.g., Sales/Contracting, Billing, Data Analytics, Operations)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Optum’s business practices and structures (e.g., operations, systems, tools, processes, management, disciplines)
  • Seek opportunities to learn about the overall Optum and UnitedHealth Group businesses (e.g., strategies, products, services, revenue streams, growth plans)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of business financials and the levers that drive profitable growth (e.g., IOI, margin, revenue)
  • Identify and recommend ways to improve overall organizational performance, based on knowledge of the business (e.g., process improvements, cost reduction opportunities, structural changes)

  • Extensive experience working for top tier pharmaceutical companies in a R&D and commercial role, with experience of multiple markets.
  • Proven strategic account management skills.
  • Proven track record on delivering P&L, especially Sales
  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Project management experience
  • A proven leader with a track record in building High Performing Teams
  • Experience in Agile practices
  • Knowledge and ongoing interest in the market and industry trends, especially in specialty, oncology and cell and gene therapy
  • Ability to inspire a cross functional team
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
