Director, Channel Optimization

The Director of Channel Optimization will build and manage a team focused on optimizing external engagement with HCPs, Patients, and Payers and informing clinical practice by leveraging digital innovation and personalized and non-personalized channels to drive our business. In collaboration with Compliance, Legal, and Corporate Affairs s/he will ensure that all activities are conducted in a compliant manner with BMS policies, procedures, and local regulatory/legal requirements. S/he will report to the Head of External Engagement & Enablement (EEE) and provide directions for developing tactics and innovative approaches to deliver the right communications to the right audience through the right channel.

The incumbent will apply enterprise mindset and lead strategically across the BMS matrix by working with stakeholders from WW medical and local market medical teams, Research & Early Development (R&ED), Global Drug Development (GDD), Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR), Global Biometric Sciences (GBS), Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Corporate Affairs, Competitive Intelligence, Legal, Business Insights & Analytics (BI&A), Strategic Sourcing & Procurement (SS&P) and other key functions. As a core member of the EEE Leadership Team, the Director of Channel Optimization is accountable for the following:

External Engagement & Experience Strategy:

  • Responsible for leading creation, development, integration, and execution of assisted and self-service Medical Communication channels including but not limited to social media, Patient Insights, and Medical Education.

  • Partner with WW Omni-channel team to identify gaps in Medical Communication channels and evolve technology and digital strategy to meet local market business needs through personalized omni-channel approach.

  • Remain current with external digital landscape for digitizing scientific communications and drive strategy for leveraging personal & non-personal channels (social media) and social media listening to broaden reach of our scientific communications.

  • Partner across the enterprise to establish common platform for collecting patient insights to enable pull-through of therapeutic area patient strategy and ensure broader distribution through social media.

  • Establish a common platform for Medical Education through collaboration and innovative thinking to better understand market needs, meet local regulations, identify learner gaps, and reduce duplication in the markets.

  • Must have strong business acumen, ability to interface with senior leaders to make trade-off decisions and navigate through budget/resource constraints to deliver on business priorities to support existing product portfolio and launches of new products into the marketplace.

Impact Assessment:

  • Leverage external insights to enhance experience of patients, HCPs, and payers.

  • Establish clear metrics aligned to meeting customer needs and demonstrating desired outcomes of activities. Regularly communicates metrics with key stakeholders.

  • Drive efficiency and innovation in operational execution of channels and services and evolve capabilities to meet External Engagement & Enablement vision and objectives.

People Management:

  • Build and lead a high-performing team by fostering innovation, collaboration, customer focus, personal accountability, and a commitment for results.

  • Drive collaboration with the therapeutic areas, country and regional medical and commercial teams to ensure Medical Communications objectives are met, address challenges, and find solutions related to omni-channel capability, technology, and standards.

  • Partner with agencies and contracted employees to ensure optimal balance of full-time and outsourced resources.

  • Ensure diversity and inclusion in decision making, organization, talent, and career development.

Technical Skills

  • Advance degree in science, business, and/or Healthcare industry experience.

  • Marketing savvy with experience with social media to provide the right communication to the right HCP at the right time.

  • In-depth knowledge in the pharmaceutical industry, external compliance, transparency, and conflict-of-interest, Medical Information, and customer engagement functions.

  • Use of information sources, management information systems and databases.

  • Electronic communication vehicles and information technology to streamline information management and delivery of Medical Information services.

  • Strong understanding of compliance and Code of Practice, Copyright issues and other legal and regulatory aspects of Medical Information. Understanding of the regulations and guidelines governing the supply, marketing, and advertising of drugs in country of operation.

  • Networks with internal and external contacts to keep up to date with issues, developments, technological changes and evaluates these for implications and implementation where relevant to the business.

  • Knowledge of financial management processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 8 - 10 years of Pharmaceutical/Healthcare industry experience with a focus on global knowledge management, customer experience, and external engagement.

  • At least 5 years of experience of leading a commercialization matrix team; medical preferred.

  • Position requires exceptional business acumen and ability to think strategically, impact and influence senior executives to drive optimal business results.

  • Advanced leadership skills, experience in managing global/virtual teams, understanding of Research and Drug Development portfolio, and the ability to communicate data in an impactful way.

  • Demonstrated ability in the use, design, implementation, and application of IT for information services provision.

  • Experience in managing relationships with suppliers and service providers to deliver customer-focused services.

  • Proven experience establishing strategic direction/vision for an organization, and proven ability to implement such vision; ability to take educated risk, rise above technical expertise; demonstrating judgement, wisdom and understanding of impact.

  • Proven experience in building new capabilities, right-sizing existing teams, leading high-performing teams through change.

  • Ability to facilitate discussions, decision-making with cross-functional and cross-cultural teams, challenge status quo, ability to influence and negotiate appropriate solutions, experience in project managing multiple priorities under tight time constraints and proven ability to establish strong stakeholder relationships (internal and external).

  • Effective communication, strong matrix leadership management, and enterprise mindset.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 10 – 15% of time.
