The Position

The Executive Director, Medical Affairs Outcomes Research (MAOR) US Field Medical Lead is responsible for leading and managing the team of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) across the US and will oversee multiple therapeutic areas, while also maintaining a hands-on, field-based role within their assigned geography. In addition, the MAOR US Lead will closely partner with stakeholders to develop the US Medical Affairs (USMA) Digital Medical Strategy and shape the digital roadmap and portfolio to quickly deliver the highest value outcomes. This role involves developing and implementing strategies to maximize the team’s effectiveness in engaging key opinion leaders (KOLs) and other healthcare professionals, fostering relationships and supporting the Company’s scientific and medical objectives. This position reports to the Head of MAOR and will be an active member of the MAOR Leadership team responsible for contributing with the mission and vision and the evolution of the function, including responsibility for multichannel leadership and digital strategies to reach providers.


Responsibilities

  • Direct the development and execution of US medical science liaison (MSL) strategies as well as oversight of MSL territory plans.

  • Hire, direct, develop and manage US MSL team to meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure and maintain high-level of scientific knowledge for self/team.

  • Develop field-based tactical plan, across multiple therapeutic areas, in alignment with medical strategy and overall company objectives.

  • Lead, manage and provide strategic direction to the US MSL team, while fostering a culture of trust, transparency, empowerment, cross-functional collaboration, and mutual accountability.

  • Ensure MSLs have the necessary training and resources for effective scientific engagement of KOLs, fostering of relationships, and dissemination of data in response to unsolicited requests.

  • Support MSLs in the development of individual territory plans and KOL mapping initiatives.

  • Develop metrics to evaluate MSL performance, monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and generate regular reports to assess the team’s impact and success in supporting medical objectives.

  • Ensure all team activities within the designated region adhere to regulatory requirements, company policies and industry guidelines.

  • Deliver internal educational training sessions for internal stakeholders, including disease state, therapeutic landscape, and product information to stay updated on scientific advancements and industry trends.

  • Act as a senior, strategic counselor/architect for USMA to deeply connect and closely partner with USMA stakeholders to develop the USMA Digital Medical Strategy and shape the digital roadmap and portfolio to quickly deliver highest value outcomes.

  • Enable consistent, personalized, and impactful communications and engagement to customers (patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, payers, and policymakers), enhance clinical practice through digital tools/technologies, and advance clinical care through digital health technologies to enhance the customer experience, improve patient outcomes, and foster/incubate new methodologies and innovations to future-proof the healthcare system at large.

  • Balance long term vision with short-term delivery, make wise decisions to invest/build/sustain, identify barriers and enablers, catalyze the organization to develop, connect, and drive tactics that deliver on our vision.

  • Collaborate with scientific communications to establish a platform for collection and dissemination of actionable medical insights.

  • Collaborate cross functionally to develop and implement a platform for Investigator-Sponsored Trials (ISTs) and develop a framework with which the MSL team can support investigators who wish to submit ISTs.

  • Lead, contribute to, attend, and provide scientific support at international, national, regional, and local medical conferences.

  • Enable consistent, personalized, and impactful communications and engagement to customers (patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, payers, and policymakers), enhance clinical practice through digital tools/technologies, and advance clinical care through digital health technologies to enhance the customer experience, improve patient outcomes, and foster/incubate new methodologies and innovations to future-proof the healthcare system at large.

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, this role will:

  • Maintain an active, hands-on role as an MSL within the assigned geography, engaging with healthcare professional, KOLs and key stakeholders.

  • Ensure the appropriate dissemination of transparent, fair-balanced scientific and clinical information, knowledge, and services in a timely, compliant, ethical, and customer-focused manner.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in delivering educational resources and clinical information in response to an established need/request.

  • Engage in timely and fair-balanced scientific exchanges with HCPs.

  • Facilitate scientific exchange, foster advocacy, and support educational initiatives.

  • Liaise with Clinical Operations to support company-sponsored studies as agreed upon during study start up.

  • Develop Patient Engagement Strategies for disease state awareness impact.

  • Develop Congress Scientific Programs to educate clinicians about scientific data through medical symposia and other forums.

Required Education, Experience and Skills

  • Advanced clinical/science degree or health care professional credentials required (MD, PhD, RPh, PharmD, NP, PA, MS or equivalent).

  • Minimum of five years of experience in field medical excellence or seven years or equivalent as a Medical Science Liaison in Women’s Health, gathering insights from Field Medical (FM) and Medical Information (MI) to identify knowledge gaps and acting upon those insights.

  • Demonstrated leadership in creating and executing scientific symposia for new product launches, using a multichannel approach for patients, providers and payers.

  • Minimum of three years of experience in creating and deploying digital solutions to drive organizational thinking and strategy.

  • Minimum of three years of experience in working with cross-functional teams to develop a Digital Medical Strategy and shape the digital roadmap and portfolio.

  • Ability to quickly deliver highest value outcomes and drive multichannel leadership and digital strategies to reach providers.

  • Ability to properly analyze medical questions as a source of medical insights.

  • Minimum of three years of experience in identifying digital tools and formats and acting upon associated insights and responding to the need for virtual interactions and real-time responses.

  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement business/clinical strategies and tactical plans with quantifiable performance metrics and direct team achievement of impact goals and objectives.

  • Experience in designing and implementing competency development programs focused on communication, leadership and business skill enhancement preferred.

  • Proven track record of developing a multichannel patient engagement strategy.

  • A minimum of five years of experience in coordinating and collaborating with training, clinical development, and marketing departments to create innovative approaches to ensure clinical preparedness of team and availability of appropriate customer facing materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to direct scientific advisor team to plan and execute impactful scientific programs for key assets.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including building strong working relationships and managing and resolving conflict.

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, listening, and presentation).

  • Current knowledge & full understanding of all relevant industry, legal, and regulatory compliance guidelines.
