    Cardiac Surgery Stepdown Nurses support the care continuum for the post-surgical cardiac patient such as heart transplant, valve repair/replacement, endocarditis, coronary artery bypass, transapical or transcutaneous valve replacement (TAVR/TVIV) and aortic aneurysm repair. Nurses provide specialized acute care in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. It is recognized as a Center of Excellence for left ventricular assist device implantation and management and care of the patient after heart transplantation surgery. Nurses in this environment possess strong critical thinking skills and are able to make autonomous decisions. Nurses also have the opportunity to be involved in the patient’s progress from the immediate post-op period through discharge. Barnes-Jewish is consistently ranked as one of the top cardiac hospitals in the country, and performs the region’s highest volumes of heart procedures, which results in superior outcomes for cardiac patients.

Overview

The Cardiac stepdown division (7200) supports the care continuum for post-surgical cardiac patients. The team provides specialized acute care in a fast-paced environment.� It is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission for left ventricular assist device implantation and management and care of the patient after heart transplantation surgery.� Nurses in this environment possess strong critical thinking skills and are able to make autonomous decisions.� Nurses also have the opportunity to be involved in the patient's progress from the immediate post-op period all the way through discharge.� The staff in this unit demonstrates a true passion for nursing and joy for their work.


Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
    Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
  • Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
  • Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
