Job Purpose

The Associate Director, Strategic Partnership enables the WorldWide Patient Safety (WWPS) organization to partner effectively with service providers, research institutions and internal stakeholders. This role supports the development of the WWPS partnership strategy, partners with the different stakeholders to drive execution and enables measurement of success. This is a global leadership position within Business Capabilities and Innovation (BCI), in WorldWide Patient Safety (WWPS) supporting and guiding various functions within WWPS. This position reports to the Head, Innovation, Partnerships & Process Optimization and is based in Europe or US.

The individual applies a combination of pharmacovigilance, leadership and execution experience to manage the resource, financial and productivity needs within WWPS functions. The Associate Director, Strategic Partnership supports and empowers WWPS to successfully manage the activities associated with the management and acquisition of service providers globally. Utilizing their understanding of business needs and safety information processes, the individual is responsible for leading projects that create and expand WWPS capabilities and capacity to ensure excellence in delivery of WWPS objectives.

The individual is responsible for promoting a culture of accountability, execution and governance, innovation, collaboration and experimentation; managing cross functional collaboration and communication outside of WWPS and BMS if applicable and assessing business impact to determine optimization opportunities to improve overall functioning of WWPS.

The Associate Director, Strategic Partnership, will collaborate closely with Procurement, other Vendor Oversight Functions within BMS, WWPS Chief of Staff (Strategy/Operations), the Patient Safety Excellence capability, the Innovation and PV Intelligence functions and as needed all WWPS functional organization to effectively consult on, manage and execute initiatives aligned to the strategy for BCI within WWPS.

Key Activities

The individual acts a knowledge leader, promoter and supporter for strategy-based outsourcing and partnering decisions across WWPS. The goal of this role is to improve business outcomes by reducing redundancies and risks in our processes while increasing synergies and capability development. This role supports the organization in strategic clarity and execution excellence; and where needed integrated and aligned planning.

Strategic Partnership Service Providers

  • Provide the leadership, strategy and policy for the function by building a high-performance engagement model with the business stakeholder in multiple geographic regions

  • Performance – Enable and if needed drive competitive sourcing events (RFQs, RFIs, RFPs) and support vendor selection, commercial negotiation, and market awareness from a WWPS perspective

  • Ensure that the approach adopted is aligned with and supports enterprise and WWPS strategy

  • Service Provider Relationship Management - Serve as a thought leader and harmonizer of Relationship Management

  • Supplier Value Management - Lead Supplier Value Management implementation with the key suppliers to foster innovation, manage supplier performance, establish a Governance Model, and ensure continuous improvement with a focus on innovation and OpEx activities

  • Inclusive leadership - foster a working environment where employees feel supported and empowered to execute on commitments

Strategic Partnership Other Stakeholders

  • Effectively engage with PV Intelligence and other intelligence functions to drive (internal and external) partnerships that support enterprise and WWPS strategy and execution

  • Initiate and drive academic partnership to meet the innovation needs of WWPS to appropriately drive the development of safety science and risk management strategy.

  • Act as point of contact for Global Drug Development or BMS initiatives that address common problems across organizations that are within the scope of this role.

Strategy, Execution and Planning

  • Facilitates, supports or consults on alignment of strategic choices with regards to business model improvement or planning across WWPS LT colleagues and stakeholders

  • Supports functional strategy and execution process and activities as needed

  • Identifies and materializes opportunities for process optimization, innovation, and/or partnership projects (internal and external).

  • Supports functions within WWPS in planning and execution as needed.

  • Responsible for execution of initiatives led by BCI which drive innovation, process optimization and operational effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Master’s level degree (or bachelor’s degree with relevant experience) in medical, life sciences, or other relevant fields or a combination of relevant education or professional experience

  • Minimum Six (6) years of pharmacovigilance, epidemiology or risk management experience and minimum Two (2) years of operating model innovation or strategic outsourcing experience OR

  • Minimum Six (6) years of operating model innovation or strategic outsourcing experience and Two (2) years of pharmacovigilance, epidemiology or risk management experience.

  • Demonstrated success in defining and executing on functional strategy

  • Experience coordinating diverse project activities and deliverables in a fluid environment

  • Experience in leading through influencing in international and cross-functional matrix organizations

  • Experience/Familiarity with design thinking methodologies and/or process improvement methodologies

  • Experience managing complex processes and ability to identify potential challenges and implement solutions to drive timely and flawless execution

  • Excellent partnering, collaboration, influencing, and negotiation skills. Strong collaborator with teams within WWPS and across BMS to drive innovation and capabilities projects to successful completion

  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills (in English). Strong communicator able to integrate and succinctly summarize the various parts of a project and effectively tailor messages to audience incl. senior leaders

  • Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual respect

  • Ability to promote cooperation and commitment within a team to achieve goals and deliverables.

  • Ability to resolve complex problems and manage difficult stakeholder situations

  • Promotes and practices effective pro-active decision-making, ensuring timely coordination and dissemination of information
