Job Description

Be a Part of the Legacy | Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Program

The Bio-Process Drug Substance Commercialization department in our Company's Manufacturing Division seeks a post-doctoral scholar who will develop next-generation, advanced computational models to support the commercialization of continuous processing of large molecules (e.g., biologics). As a potential candidate, you have advanced graduate degree(s) in an engineering or scientific discipline that is relevant to mechanistic modeling and process automation of large molecules. Your graduate research or work experience must have a specialization in process modeling, computational sciences, and/or bioprocessing operations.

Additional Key Responsibilities

  • Using a variety of process-modeling tools, you will build and apply mechanistic models and predictive tools for large-molecule drug substance manufacturing integrated operations | Examples of techniques you may use include flowsheet models, engineering models (mass, momentum, energy transport, mathematical, etc.), data driven models, and other modeling methods

  • May be required to build empirical, data-driven relations for parts of the overall model

  • Apply your model as a “digital twin” to enable real decisions in our Company's manufacturing plants, and drive efficiency and quality improvements, which are expected to lead to external publications and/or patents

  • Work across our Company's continuous-manufacturing network

  • Work directly with the Bio-separation Sciences group, the large-molecule Computational & Digital group and with our Company's Research Laboratory


  • PhD OR receive a PhD by Fall 2022 | PhD degree may be in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, or any other relevant discipline

  • Expertise with one or more computational techniques relevant to large-molecules modeling | First-principle engineering models | Flowsheet models | Data-driven models | Numerical methods (e.g., must be able to setup and solve linear/non-linear equations, ODEs, PDEs, etc.) | Statistical methods | Other modeling methods

  • Proficient in programming in one or more standard language: Python, Matlab, C/C++, R, DeltaV, etc.

  • Principled verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills


  • Expertise in upstream and/or downstream bioprocessing manufacturing unit operations

  • Background in automation and data management

  • Expertise in using flowsheet modeling software, e.g., gPROMS, ASPEN, or SuperPro

  • Effective organization skills and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Strong track record of publications, presentations, and/or patents
