Job Description

New hires in office-based roles in the US & Puerto Rico will be required, subject to applicable law, to demonstrate that they have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or qualify for a medical or religious exemption to this vaccination requirement that can be accommodated without an undue burden to the operation. The Materials and Biophysical Characterization (MBC) department within our Analytical Research and Development (AR&D) – our Research Division organization is seeking a highly motivated and innovative scientist interested in positively impacting our company’s vaccine pipeline.

This position is for a Senior Scientist to join MBC at our West Point, PA site. They will play a pivotal role on a team responsible for advanced biophysical and materials characterization of our increasingly complex vaccine portfolio.

Responsibilities include biophysical and materials science assessments of the active vaccine, adjuvants and formulated product(s) using advanced analytical techniques enabling the development pipeline. The ideal candidate will be expected to play a leading role in the development of biophysical analytical techniques enabling characterization of higher order structure and particles, problem solving/troubleshooting of the upstream and downstream active process and building understanding of formulation stability. Leveraging materials science experience the candidate will assess properties of novel adjuvants and delivery vehicles such as Aluminum, lipid nanoparticle, emulsion and lyophilized formulations. While most biomaterials will be vaccines, there will also be opportunities to perform advanced biophysical characterization of complex molecules such as synthetic peptides, bioconjugates, small molecules and proteins.

Education Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Biophysics, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Biologics, Chemical Engineering or related discipline with 0-4 years’ experience.

  • Master’s degree in Biophysics, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Biologics, Chemical Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of five (5) years relevant industrial experience.


  • The successful candidate must be highly self-motivated, demonstrate strong partnership and mentorship skills, have excellent written and oral communication abilities, collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary teams, and be able to demonstrate flexibility in adapting to change in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • The selected candidate will have a strong background in biophysical/biochemistry with application in biotherapeutics characterization, analytical method development and perform independent research including data capture and interpretation for vaccines, biologics or materials.

  • Furthermore, biophysical and materials science analytical competency in areas such as flow cytometry, circular dichroism (CD), florescence, particle sizing, thermal analyses such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) is preferred.

  • Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and other spectroscopic techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM) along with informatics data analysis are also considered valuable skills.

  • Our goal is to develop fundamental mechanistic understanding for our company's biotherapeutic development portfolio including structure and dynamics, where possible enabling our teams to solve complex challenges and get lifesaving and altering medicines to our patients faster.

  • Ability to evaluate potential innovative research areas and/or apply innovative solutions to project problems.

  • Be accountable for the quality, appropriateness, and scientific rigor of experimental data.

  • Have excellent communication, and good organization & interpersonal skills.

  • Provide high quality contributions both independently and as a part of multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Have a positive and dynamic attitude to work, and highly motivated to learn to new concepts and technologies.

  • Present scientific and technical results internally and contribute to patents, presentations and publications.
