The Vice President of Corporate Planning and Chief of Staff role is responsible for supporting the Chief Growth Officer (“CGO”) and team of ~900 employees within the Optum Growth Office organization. While this role will continue to focus on directly supporting the CGO and enabling the markets to achieve objectives in business retention, origination, and satisfaction. It will also support an enterprise focus; influencing, enabling, and driving performance across all Optum businesses by leading planning, implementation, and execution of the annual growth strategy.

Position Overview:

  • Orchestrate schedules, priorities, and synthesize information to optimize CGO’s time
  • Solid interpersonal skills to collaboratively work across the Growth Community and Enterprise with various stakeholders to ensure key deliverables and issues are addressed, using discretion on prioritization
  • Be a credible, knowledgeable resource and authority, clearly conveying the proper point-of-view on behalf of Growth Office on a variety of topics and issues (proxy for CGO)
  • Drive execution and follow up in support of strategies and goals; demonstrated record of accomplishment and impact

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage planning and preparation of meetings, agenda, and content for CGO (staff meetings, forecast calls, quarterly growth reviews, corporate deliverables, etc.)
  • Liaison with partners (Consumer/Marketing, Communications, etc.) to execute on strategies defined with CGO (i.e., CGO helps set strategy/direction and COS works with partners to bring to 90% and engage CGO at milestones)
  • Manage interaction with Executive requests for Board, MBR mtgs, Optum Leadership Roundtable (“OLR”) (frame key status with input from Officer)
  • Support development of Optum Growth Plan to support long range and annual business planning
  • Weekly/bi-weekly content updates for OLR or other leadership mtgs as needed
  • Liaison with Growth Leaders on key deliverables (quarterly growth reviews, forecast calls, etc.)
  • Orchestrate schedules and priorities to use time effectively

Necessary Attributes / Skills for Position:

  • Solid planning and organizational skills – meticulous in every detail
  • Lead and engage others in effective time and resource management
  • Sales background a plus but not required to understand roles of team and external viewpoint
  • Smart, quick study and able to engage with leaders and teams and navigate the enterprise effectively (e.g., CoS network, solid relationships)
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion (situational awareness, high emotional intelligence)
  • Honest broker of various perspectives and voices to CGO
  • Synthesize information to key aspects/priorities or objectives
  • Discretion to engage support/action of team and recognize how to have their time applied effectively
  • Solid leadership shadow and representative of CGO without ego
  • Manage preparation and ensure highest standards of quality of Growth Office communications, reports, briefings, presentations, and responses
  • Ensure appropriate input has been received before an issue or proposal is presented for decision or action; ensure any materials are in good form prior to presentation
  • Manage information flow to and from to help facilitate decisions being made in a timely manner
  • Ensure delegated tangential issues are timely handled by appropriate executive or staff
  • Have sound thinking and judgment. Be able to quickly prioritize issues/items
  • Have solid interpersonal skills and advanced oral and written communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
  • Have a large capacity for work and able to juggle multiple issues/items while maintaining thoughtful consideration with each of those issues/items, delegate work to appropriate staff where necessary
  • Have ability to foster a cooperative work environment and deal proactively and productively with conflict
  • Have a keen intuitive sense of detecting and resolving issues – good “antennae”
  • Have/develop a solid sense of the overall priorities and objectives of the enterprise
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data, information, insights and recommendations
  • Be reasonably flexible, able to travel and adapt to a wide variety of circumstances

Required Qualifications:

  • BA / BS degree or related field and/or equivalent education and experience
  • 10+ years of combined experience and a proven track record of driving major transformational change and delivering measurable results, and developing and leading growth programs or initiatives
  • 5+ years of experience in working with data and making data-driven analytical decisions
  • Event strategy experience
  • Experience assimilating and analyzing information pertaining to the customer experience
  • Experience driving and articulating client-obsessed change
  • Experience presenting and influencing for senior level executives and at all levels within multi- business segments
  • Experience motivating, developing, coaching, and guiding people in a matrixed organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of combined experience in product / program / project management , delivering cross-organizational programs and leading strategic initiatives of diverse scope in a cross-functional environment
  • 2+ years consulting experience
  • Chief of Staff experience, supporting Senior Executives
  • Experience with applying Design Thinking methodologies and/or a Human Centered Design
  • Experience leading Enterprise-wide programs in a highly matrixed organization
  • Experience with the Sales/Growth/Retention, Net Promoter System (NPS), Customer Satisfaction
  • Experience supporting Optum Markets (Payers, Employers, Providers, Federal/State government, Emerging Markets)
  • Experience working across UHG, Optum and UHC lines of businesses
  • Advanced ability with Microsoft suite (e.g., Teams, PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and other collaboration tools
  • Proficient skills and knowledge of servant leadership, resilience, resourcefulness, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $174,600 to $332,200.
