Be a part of the legacy: Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program

Our Research Laboratories’ Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. With the resources, reach, and expertise of a large pharmaceutical company, postdoctoral researchers will be positioned to excel in an institution committed to breakthrough innovation in research and discovery.

Position Overview:

As a member of the Research Division Analytical Research and Development (AR&D) department, the postdoctoral fellow will work with a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team of scientists utilizing state of the art technology to invent, develop and apply novel analytical methodologies. The postdoctoral fellow will perform cutting-edge research that centers around machine learning, spectroscopy, and chemical imaging to ultimately enhance pharmaceutical development. This novel analytical methodology will focus on both data collection and data analysis strategies, with an emphasis on applying new analytical tools within key pharmaceutical applications, including process analytical technology (PAT), vaccine development, and enzyme immobilization.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design and perform hyperspectral imaging (i.e., Raman hyperspectral imaging) in conjunction with machine learning, multivariate analysis, and chemometric methods.

  • Conduct in-line, in situ spectroscopy, including Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), coupled with advanced data analysis.

  • Investigate vaccine upstream & downstream processes, biological crystallization events, synthetic organic reactions, and heterogenous chemical and biological transformations using in situ analytical tools.

  • Investigate diverse, complex materials (proteins, enzymatic immobilization matrices, biological tissues, polymorphs, tablets, etc.) using chemical imaging tools. Analysis of resulting chemical imaging data sets using machine learning strategies.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Candidates must currently hold a Ph.D. OR receive a Ph.D. by the end of 2022.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Strong background in analytical chemistry

  • Ability to design experiments, interpret and track results, and utilize this information to enable development of analytical methodology

  • Innovative, creative, and highly motivated

  • Track record of scientific contributions (including peer-reviewed manuscripts), and strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge in machine learning, chemometrics, and multivariate data analysis, with hands-on experience in using these approaches

  • Thorough understanding of spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging (with a focus on Raman-based techniques), including hands-on experience in investigating chemical and/or biological materials

  • Application of multivariate curve resolution (MCR), principal component analysis (PCA) and/or partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) for analysis of chemical data

  • Understanding of chemical imaging (i.e., Raman microscopy) and inline, in situ analytical technology (i.e., ATR-FTIR spectroscopic methods)
