Job Description:

The Research Associate II supports biomedical research in the Cellular and Immune Based Adjuncts for Casualty Care (CIBACC) department at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX. NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

The member plans, organizes, and conducts highly independent research upon approval of the principal investigator; designs, tests, and evaluates methods and protocol for research projects; analyzes, summarizes, and organizes collected data; together with principal investigator, generally publishes results of investigations in professional journals. Purchase and/or recommend purchase of new equipment for research projects; under the direction of the principal investigator, generally responsible for the scientific operations of the laboratory; may oversee laboratory/unit personnel.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Research new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reports to the principal investigator relative to feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments.

  • Adapts procedures or methods relative to changes in research projects.

  • Assists with collection of supporting documentation for contract packages, IACUC/IRB protocols for projects performed under this contract, research proposals and protocols, manuscripts, SOP’s, reports and presentation editing/review. Assists Government personnel in initiating and maintaining regulatory IACUC/IRB requirements.

  • Design and implement research protocols, including regulatory requirements, safety procedures, maintenance of study records and all activities associated with internal and external audits.

  • Supervises the safe handling of hazardous material; coordinates purchasing requests and writes specifications and justifications for equipment purchases.

  • Assists in ordering supplies for research under contract for procurement; assists in maintenance of inventory of supplies for research under contract.

  • Collates and analyzes complex data; maintains computer database for the study.

  • Oversees the work of junior level contract personnel.

  • Monitors progress of research projects and coordinates information between departmental sections.

  • Performs a wide and complex variety of assays, test, and studies.

  • Performs highly specialized and advanced experiments, to include cellular and small animal work.

  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, and evaluates specimens and/or tissue cultures.

  • Assists PI in tracking and updating established project budgets.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a basic or health science with 2-4 years of experience

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent. Web based classes do not meet these standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a basic or health science with two years of experience.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $44,200.00 - $68,000.00 - $91,800.00
