Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Crystallization for Isolation of Drug Substance compounds.
Be a part of the legacy: Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program
Our Research Laboratories’ Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. With the resources, reach, and expertise of a large pharmaceutical company, postdoctoral researchers will be positioned to excel in an institution committed to breakthrough innovation in research and discovery.
Our Company is on a quest for cures and is committed to being the world’s premier, most research-intensive biopharmaceutical company. Today, we’re doubling down on this goal. Our Company's Research Laboratories is a true scientific research facility of tomorrow and will take our company's leading discovery capabilities and world-class small molecule and biologics R&D expertise to create breakthrough science that radically changes the way we approach serious diseases.
As a postdoctoral fellow in our Research & Development Division Chemical Engineering Research and Development Department based in Rahway, NJ, you will collaborate closely with a highly motivated cross-functional team of scientists to design and develop feedback control crystallization systems for the isolation of drug substance compounds. Through experimental design, modeling, and process controller tuning, you will develop new technologies and methodologies that can produce crystals with desired physical properties. This work will advance the field of feedback control in the in the pharmaceutical industry as well as enhance the understanding of crystallization process development and scale-up.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Designing, developing, and performing batch crystallization experiments and characterizing these processes through a variety of in-line and off-line analytical tools.
Establishing an appropriate process controller and developing the associated controller tuning protocol to perform feedback-controlled crystallization to achieve target particle features.
Expanding the controller strategy to include multiple feedback loops in parallel (e.g., MIMO approaches, schedulers, logic controllers) to optimize particle features.
Demonstrating benefits of feedback crystallizations across scales while identifying and troubleshooting scale-up challenges.
Education Minimum Requirement:
PhD in Chemical Engineering with less than 3 years of Postdoctoral Experience or will you have completed your PhD within the next year.
Required Experience and Skills (at least one of the following):
General knowledge of crystallization concepts such as supersaturation, growth and nucleation kinetics, and kinetic and thermodynamic driving forces.
General familiarity with process control theory such as proportional-integral-derivative controller concepts.
Proficiency in laboratory automation software (e.g., LabVIEW) or process modeling software (e.g., Matlab, gPROMS).
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Familiarity with a variety of process analytical tools, including focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), infrared (IR), and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Familiarity with particle engineering technology and concepts, such as wet milling.
Demonstrated competency around data interpretation, manuscript preparation, publication and presentation of results.
