We are seeking a highly driven and motivated postdoctoral research scholar to join the Materials & Biophysical Characterization group within Analytical Research & Development. This individual will develop novel crystallization strategies and methodologies to nucleate and grow ‘difficult-to-crystallize’ compounds and to discover novel solid forms utilizing knowledge of computationally predicted crystal structures. These hypothetical crystal structures would serve as a roadmap to rationally design and identify conditions that would favor the experimental formation of the targeted solid forms. These disruptive approaches have the potential to significantly reduce the timescale for solid form discovery and may provide environmental benefits through the reduced consumption of material and solvents associated with fewer experiments. The postdoctoral research scholar will collaborate closely with other functional areas including Computational & Structural Chemistry, External Capabilities and Structure Elucidation, and external research institutions.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Perform computational analyses to guide targeted experimentation for crystallization.
Design and develop novel crystallization methodologies, and execute studies to discover and identify novel solid forms.
Leverage traditional and advanced physical characterization techniques to understand solid-state properties.
Understand the mechanism and role of solution chemistry in which different external factors (e.g. pressure, solvents, additives, etc.) can impact the outcome of the crystallization process.
Aid the integration of computational predictions, solid form informatics and experimental screening to shift the discovery of crystal forms from serendipity to "by design".
Interpret and present data to internal and external collaborators.
Collaborate effectively with cross-functional and technical experts to facilitate scientific success and breakthroughs.
Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present work at scientific meetings.
Ensure that safe laboratory practices are followed.
Education Minimum Requirement:
Candidates must currently hold a Ph.D. or receive a Ph.D. by Fall 2022. Preferred educational background includes but is not restricted to Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutics, Physical Chemistry, or a related field.
Required Experience and Skills:
Experience in physical characterization (X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, spectroscopy, etc.) of organic and/or inorganic materials.
Interest in utilizing computational and cheminformatics tools and approaches for decision-making.
Proven ability to independently design and execute experiments, interpret data, and identify appropriate follow-up studies.
Strong work ethic, curiosity to learn about new scientific areas, and high research productivity in a laboratory environment.
Track record of adaptability, creativity, critical thinking, innovation, integrity, and teamwork.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to multi-task and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
Have excellent communication, and good organization and interpersonal skills.
Strong track record of scientific achievements (publications, patent, etc.) and effective writing skills.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Knowledge of chemical crystallography, computational solid-state modeling, crystal structure prediction, and analysis of crystal structures.
Knowledge and skills in analytical characterization (NMR, HPLC, IR, etc.).
Demonstrated aptitude for learning and adopting new techniques and technologies.
