Job Description

The Future Talent Program features co-ops that last up to 6 months and will include one or more projects. We identify and target steps in disease mechanisms or pathways that could be inhibited or enhanced. Our goal is to isolate a compound that is effective against a disease target. Using innovative thinking, state-of-the-art facilities, and robust scientific methodology we collaborate to discover the next medical breakthrough.

The Departments of Discovery & Process Research in our Research & Development Division located in Rahway, NJ, Kenilworth, NJ, West Point, PA, Boston, MA, and South San Francisco, CA are seeking co-op students. The co-ops will function as fully integrated members of a project chemistry team. In addition to the discovery and development of synthetic routes to potential drug candidates, the Process Research department is engaged in bio- and chemocatalysis screening and development, laboratory automation, preparative-scale chromatography, and analytical research. Day-to-day research will focus on using techniques in organic chemistry to understand and solve key synthetic challenges of interest to the synthetic community.

The co-ops in Discovery and Process will also participate in departmental and project team meetings to provide a broad perspective on the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry. The co-op is responsible for accurate electronic notebook recording, reaction set-up techniques, use of vacuum evaporation devices, thin-layer chromatography, flash chromatography, basic workup procedures, basic Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) interpretation, basic MS interpretation, and safe lab practices. Co-ops will have the opportunity to gain further knowledge and skillsets via refinement of organic chemistry skills, introduction to new spectroscopic and purification techniques, exposure to problems in process and discovery research, and perspective on the practical aspects of drug development. In addition, the co-op student will have an opportunity to present their research results in both oral and written formats.
