Position Summary

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and highly motivated medicinal chemist who is passionate about leading from the bench to join our Small Molecule Drug Discovery team in Brisbane. The successful candidate will be an expert in the field of organic synthesis with a strong commitment to experimental work, have hands on experience with a wide range of modern synthetic transformations, and will have demonstrated an ability to design new synthetic targets independently and in a hypothesis-driven manner based on emerging SAR data. She/he will contribute to programs by executing lead optimization strategies and driving critical path drug discovery objectives through the synthesis and creative design of molecules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carries out multi-step synthesis, isolation, purification, and characterization of small organic compounds.
  • Designs efficient routes to target molecules of a wide range of complexity by applying modern synthetic methods.
  • Conducts literature searching to design synthetic routes, problem solve synthetic issues and understand the competitive landscape.
  • Interprets SAR and independently designs targets with improved properties.
  • Presents cross-functional research at departmental and project team meetings.
  • Performs scale-up of key intermediates and compounds.
  • Is responsible for ensuring compliance with safe laboratory practices and EH&S guidelines.
  • Contributes to new inventions.
  • May be responsible for communicating progress, milestones, changes in timelines, etc. to all key stakeholders.
  • Is a team-player, collaboratively and effectively working with scientists across different disciplines to succeed together.
  • Is a role model for junior staff.
  • May author technical documents in support of patent applications and scientific manuscripts, etc.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry with 4 - 7 years pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry industrial experience or postdoctoral experience.
  • M.S. in synthetic organic chemistry with 4-7 years pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry industrial experience.
  • B.S. in synthetic organic chemistry with 7-10 years pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry industrial experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in synthesis, purification, and spectroscopic characterization (NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, etc.) of novel compounds using a wide variety of synthetic organic chemistry methods.
  • Demonstrated record of experience in property-based and in vivo driven compound optimization in organic or medicinal chemistry research as evidenced by publications and/or patents.
  • Experience searching chemical/scientific databases and proficiency with medicinal chemistry related software.
  • Strong skills in gathering, documenting, and analyzing information from competitive sources such as patents and meetings and using this information to guide program strategy.
  • Excellent written demonstrated in the ability to generate sections of peer reviewed technical reports/manuscripts, or invention disclosures for patent applications under the supervision of a primary author
  • Excellent oral communication skills demonstrated by the ability to present results, recommendations and rationale, and issues and accomplishments in project team and department meetings.
