Using robust scientific methodology, bleeding edge chemistry, and state-of-the-art instrumentation and automation, we collaborate to discover the next medical breakthrough. To achieve our goal, we focus on delivering novel mechanisms into our pipeline, expanding druggable space, and the pursuit of detailed knowledge of the mechanism of action for our key pipeline assets. We partner with multiple functional groups to complement capabilities, accelerate discoveries, and advance the best drug candidates into the clinic for significant unmet medical needs.

Passion for thinking outside the box is critical in Chemical Biology as a field and to the success of enabling drug discovery programs. We are therefore seeking an exceptional scientist and mentor for a Director role the Chemical Biology group in the Discovery Chemistry organization within our company’s Research Laboratories.

The individual will join the Chemical Biology Leadership Team and will have broad range of responsibilities across strategy, talent, and pipeline. The Director will build strong relationships within Discovery Chemistry and across Quantitative Biosciences, Genetics and Biomarker Sciences, and Therapeutic Area Biology to translate new advances in technologies into pipeline impact towards delivering innovative therapeutics. The incumbent will coach, mentor, and support career development of a team of talented scientists. In addition, the incumbent will participate in departmental and network-wide activities such as recruiting, resource-management and external engagement, as well as communicate with governance committees and external collaborators. Finally, the incumbent will be responsible for driving employee engagement within Discovery through the promotion of diversity and inclusion initiatives and supporting a culture of innovation.

Minimum required education:

PhD or equivalent with 5+ years working experience in Chemical Biology, Discovery Chemistry or a related discipline in a pharma, biotech or academic setting (MS or BS with 10+ years working experience)

Required Experience:

  • Highly self-motivated, creative, and critical thinking to solve complex technical and scientific problems with excellent attention to detail

  • Ability to build strong, inclusive relationships in highly collaborative, multidisciplinary teams to effectively drive early drug discovery initiatives

  • Project team leadership: setting strategy and driving programs to key decision points

  • Communicating effectively in a highly productive multi-disciplinary environment

  • Capable of prioritizing deliverables among multiple simultaneous projects

  • Robust publication record

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Exceptional understanding of biology concepts and chemical application to solve biological problems

  • Experience in small molecule drug discovery and in early target discovery and validation

  • Professional development and/or mentorship of others
